Chama Did Not Insult Tongas, He Was Right to Tell Them to Stop Being Regional

Dear Editor,

Tribes should be proud of their culture. If you are ashamed of certain traits in your culture it is better to do away with it rather than to take offence when people associate with it.

It is a fact that Tongas are polygamous and vote on tribal lines as the case was in January 20 by-election. So did Chama insult or merely remind them not to be regional as that will delay their ascendance to power?

Chanda Mulenga.

your analysis lacks substance and intelligence.
namwangas, mambwes tumbukas all practice polygamy.
this is practiced to protect and avoid promiscuity like in bemba and lunda tribes where everyone can sleep with anyone else.

Politicians are the ones fuelling regionalism in the name of tribalism. They are too selfish to realize that what they are doing is wrong because they cannot advise where necessary for fear of being axed or sidelined. Our current cabinet speaks volumes. Does it MEAN pipo from other regions are not qualified to take up certain positions? Zambia IS FOR A CERTAIN GROUPING. ONE ZAMBIA ONE NATION IS A MOCKERY. WHO IS TRIBAL HERE? STOP CALLING OTHER PIPO/PROVINCE TRIBAL.

But Tonga politicians also go to non-tonga provinces to ask for votes. They do not confine themselves to tonga areas. Where is tribalism there? The real tribalist is the one who says tongas should bear more children to increase their population to help put into State House any tonga who will aspire to be president since non-tongas will never vote for a tonga president ever. This is treason to me, period. It is calling for the division of Zambia. It is treason.

Chama was very careless indeed. Is there a tribe which has not produced a tribalist? Should that make Zambians judge people according to tribe? I hear the late Kapwepwe exhibited this weakness but we also know that some bemba people are very honorable statesmen and women. Chama should withdraw the statement. Not even mbuyas of the tonga tribe can issue such a divisive statement and get away with it.
