CSPR Advises Yaluma To Call For ‘Load Shedding’ Indaba

The Civil Society for Poverty Reduction (CSPR) in Eastern Province has called on government to call for a national indaba to discuss the current country wide power outages.

CSPR Eastern Province Coordinator Maxson Nkhoma has told QFM News that his organization has noted with serious concern the continued increase in loading shedding and indications from Zesco are that the current situation may continue until the next rain season.

Mr. Nkhoma says revelations from Zesco that the power utility campaign is now generating 500 megawatts instead of the normal 1,050 megawatts at Kariba Power station implies that the power electricity company is now generating less electricity by 50% and there is a possibility that this reduction can worsen in few months to come due to lower water levels at the Kariba power station Dam.

Mr. Nkhoma says a national power deficit of 50% has potential to negatively affect the end of year Gross Domestic Product (GDP) due to poor production in key sectors such as Mining who are now required to scale down their operations due to rationing of power.

He says power outages will therefore worsen household and national poverty levels as majority Zambians who work in industries where power is key for production may lose their jobs because of non availability of power.

He is of the view that Zesco working together with other stakeholders can find short term solutions that could be implemented with support and Political will from Government to address the current load shedding before it escalates into unmanageable levels.

Mr. Nkhoma says Government should take time and learn from South Africa on how they have been addressing the power deficit which hit that Country in the recent past.

He has asked Government through the Ministry of Energy and Water Development to immediately call for a National Indaba to allow stakeholders provide suggestions on how the Country can holistically deal with the current situation.

He explains that a national indaba will accord Zesco to fully explain the power deficit to citizens and what measures are being put in place to address this issue if there is any.

And in another development, the continuous load shedding of power by ZESCO has inspired local fuel vendors in Kasempa district to increase the fuel price to as high as K13 per litre.

According to Zambia National Farmers Union (ZNFU), the situation has also compelled motorists to also increase transport fares on some routes within Kasempa district from K10.00 to K 15.00.

I have just been responding to a pf rif raff about this issue. the issue cannot be solved by using the same old excuses year in year out. Zambia just like many other african countries has abundant solar source of energy. For the PF’s shallow mind by that I mean the sun. We in the UPND will ensure a shift of reliance from the traditional sources to those of solar energy. Why should we rely on water when it is clear that we are not richly blessed with rains? Can you now see why I say you pf chaps are dull and closed minded? To you because there is not enough rain, then it is ok for us to suffer.foolish. In 2016 let us vote the UPND in. The usefull idiots are no longer useful to zambia

The alternative to this overdependance on Zesco was suggested 4 days ago by thinking bloggers: Zero-rate solar gadgets and diesel/petrol generators. & govt, just yesterday, indicated what solutions can lift the burden in the short term. For you it’s the usual chorus!

any one can speak of alternatives. However, as of now the only party that has articulated what measure it would take to impelement such policies is the UPND. We want to hear the PF’s road map to achieving this. After all you guys are in power. We expect more from you. Go on and educate us bane

Yes! I see why you call them fools. It is because in their foolish minds, they know that the electorate in Zambia does not stay on face book. Also, foolishly, they know that not everyone has access to the www world. Keep on telling them brother NEZ, the fools have foolishly shown their manifesto all the way to a villager in Chipumfi village not knowing that you, the wise and clever, have already told them to like your OFFICIAL FACEBOOK PAGE!

I feel an indaba would make us be a part of the solution and not just be the victims.in these desperate times
for electricity zesco is hosting a dinner for Uhuru, question is, are they showing off or have misplaced priorities?

Seriously, I believe these indabas are a waste of resources and time. The solution is simple: promote gas coockers, lift ifima duties on ALL alternative power sources like solar panels and generators. Invest in wind generated electricity. What more will the indaba bring you beyond this? Let your indabas discuss the issue of guns in campaigns. This is life iwe baKamfulumende.

I feel there is no solution that Zesco has or the Govt to say the least. Use of fossil fuels as source of power generation alternative also has consequences, CO2 emission and not renewable. Reduction on solar energy gadgets duty will also mean loss of income by the hapless Govt so it would rather see its citizen in darkness than see its coffers get more empty.

While solar and thermal can be other supplementary energies I think investment in hydro is still ok. For now govt is even better of importing power until our hydro and other supplementary energies are still developing. You may notice that a totally shift from hydro can be more expensive than importing while developing others.

Yaluma should be held accountable. He fired Chitundu and replaced him with a cadre called Mundende just because they had planned to take the latter to China to rubberstamp some contracts. These PF guys have no developmental agenda for the country and are only interested in projects where they get cuts. Imaginne just to meet the president someone had to pay Kaizer Zulu the special Assistant for corruption at state house $200,000!! This gives you an idea of the level of corruption in this government

@we in the up n down!kikikikikikilol you are like a Headless chicken just following the wind, relying on water for power Generation has been the only thing past Governments have been doing,we the PF are barely a term in office coupled by hiccups, such as bereavement of our found,we are now picking up and mending our pieces together now. We are loaded with all these problems which should have been sorted much earlier by previous regimes. Solutions to the problem is already Tabled, which shows our leadership thinks outside the BOX,you will soon see when implementation is on the ground,un fortunately I am not a Government spokes person we follow protocol in the ruling party,so opposition cadres keep on singing choruses which won’t yield any fruits apart from Hurting.
