Nawakwi: Zambia On Auto Pilot

FDD president Edith Nawakwi says Zambia is on autopilot hence all the offshoots of bad governance, political mismanagement, unemployment and a deteriorating economy.

Nawakwi was addressing fourth year business and economics students at a public discussion on business ethics at the University of Zambia on Saturday.

“You can’t say that the voters are incompetent, it’s the political economy that Patriotic Front has forced on us, it’s not efficient, it’s not respectful.

nawakwiThey think that they are going to continue to be in power using the fact that people are poor and mind you, wherever there have been revolutions in the world, it arises out of poverty. Think of any revolution, it’s over bread; it’s over food. So Patriotic Front must know that they may just be brewing a revolution. Unless we resolve the issue of the constitution, the people are going to continue to be used as tools for elevating certain individuals to certain offices,” Nawakwi said.

“For example, sure there must be a law that adult children cannot also be members of the State House household…there is nowhere you can go because you the people of Zambia have taken all your powers and reposed them in one person and called him ‘the head of state’. He can choose today that he is minister for sewage and company and you won’t have anything to do. A person can wake up today and say ‘I am minister for all the boreholes but I am also your president’ and you won’t say ‘no’,” Nawakwi said.
She said there was need for a constitution that limits the powers of heads of state and checks the behaviour of leaders.
“So our problem number one in terms of developing, resolving our unethical conduct in this country is to provide to ourselves a constitution that limits and checks the behaviour of individuals in higher office, whether they are ministers, members of parliament, councillors. I believe and I always emphasise that [with] this Constitution that is before us, that governs our conduct in this country, even the best man in the world would be corrupt in 24 hours. You see, power by its nature corrupts. If you look at Jesus… it’s where power started. Satan went to Him and said, ‘You are hungry, can you turn this stone into bread?’ What did Jesus say? He says, ‘Get away Satan.’ Now put our presidents in State House, this State House and show them the kingdom and say ‘Jump’. They will jump! Haven’t you seen them flying around from country to country and say ‘We are doing PR work’? They are actually being tempted by Satan. So let’s sort out the Constitution,” she said.
“We need responsible leaders in politics so that we don’t have a phenomenon where irresponsible politicians start to use poverty as a tool of subjugating their people because poverty is the opium of the masses. You get into a cycle which can’t be broken because we are poor. Where Zambia is today, it’s just survival mode; there are no drivers. Zambia is on autopilot and therefore, we have all these offshoots of bad governance or political mismanagement, unemployment, no demand for goods and services, people are sharing water with animals and you have an irresponsible government saying that the economic indicators which you economists use are okay. Now, what are those indicators of growth? It’s just their pockets. What that should now say is that the economy is not growing, that it is their pockets that are growing; that is the correct position,” said Nawakwi.

The biggest problem is that they are too preoccupied with UPND and HH, excessive borrowing , by elections and the upcoming presidential election, they not even able to see the falling kwacha, the budget deficit, misapplication of public funds, the looming job cuts as result of zesco power outages, unemployment etc, for them the only thing that matters is to cling on to power.

Does the lady really understand ‘auto pilot’? Iyee mayooooo! A jumbo jet is left on auto pilot on cruise height when ALL IS WELL! Pilots switch to manual when their attention is totally needed. The Nawakwi simile sucks!! Zambia can never be on auto pilot NOW when things are bad! Sensationalisation!

Nawakwi is off the mark! Zambia is not on auto-pilot and will never be! As for her she should forget about ever occupying State House; never!! Not in a million years, that is, if she can live to be that old!

Well articulated. That is the truth unfortunately; it may not be palatable, but it is the truth. I also wish it would have been different but it is not. She has laid it as it is.

the only reason y a head state can also hold on to a ministerial posion is because such a head of state is not fit and ready for presidence. He still thinks like a minister. So lets choose presidents that have graduated from being minister…

Gentlemen and Ladies, let us not burry our heads in sand.

The country is in a desperate situation. The economy is fast crumbling down. The country is being mismanaged.

It’s now that we need to tell those in leadership to correct the situation before it gets out of hand.
