To start to think people from another group or region are “wrong by default”. It’s the great-granddaddy of racism and sexism.
It is so disheartening to stand witness to the tribal battles and hurt messages that are going on in the country. What breaks my heart more is that most of the people perpetrating this evil are young people. Its unfortunate that members of the same country can turn on each other like a bunch of animals. In the last few weeks it has been raining heavily in Zambia, rains of tribalism but I have fervent hope that the sun will soon shine.
Let’s all remember that all of us wake up every day, with very similar ambitions and goals. I’ve moved across our beautiful country Zambia and I’ve never met a single town, province or church, where *everybody* there did *nothing* useful. So if you see someone saying “Tribe A will never rule Zambia” that’s a big red flag for tribal thinking. Its offensive nonsense and I advise that you distance yourself from it. Darkness cannot drive out hate; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.
Let us therefore heal the wounds and free ourselves from the bondage of tribalism, let’s use our variety of languages and cultures instead as our source of strength and richness. It is possible and it can be done.
we should no longer vow our mutual destruction but solemnly acknowledge our inter dependence as free and equal citizens of our common Motherland.Nyanja,Bemba,Tonga,Lozi,Soli,Kaonde and all other tribes too numerous to mention, make up one united Zambia. Let us all re-affirm our solemn constitutional compact to live together on the basis of equality and mutual respect.
Finally I appeal for forgiveness and national reconciliation. Reconciliation means working together to correct the legacy of past injustice. It means making a success of our plans for reconstruction and development. Fellow citizens, Let us join hands and build a truly Zambian nation where every person will have a right to rise and achieve their full potential irrespective of tribe, region or province.
My fellow Youths always remember that older men declare war. But it is the youth that must fight and die. One Zambia, one Nation! Thanking You!

It is disappointing that under the pf we have seen unprecedented levels of tribalism. Tribalism is being promoted under the pf where we have seen the pf top leadership making tribal statements . vote upnd

I think self introspection is necessary here, under the leadership of Anderson Mazoka UPND was not being labeled tribal as the case today. The question is why?

I have read your previous comment. You seem obsessed with Mazoka. Look, HH is not and will never be mazoka. You cannot expect us all to be the same. If you feel like mazoka is the only person under pf who you would want to rule you, then my friend you are not living. Learn to move on and build on with what you have in life. The only people shouting tribalism are the same ones that are issuing statements of TV about tongas that are tribal. Your own SG proudly went on a tribal rant. Now I will challenge you to point me to a source which proves HH or the upnd as tribal. And i mean official source and not what you heard from your grandfather in the village

After HH lost the last election, he stood in front of the cameras and said ” I have not been declared president because am Tonga”. During a bye-election campaign prior to 2011 elections, HH told voters in Katuba not to vote for Nickson Chilambwe because he did not come from there. “why mufunakuvotela Chilambwe kuno, let him go and stand kwameukoko kuma Luapula kwamene achokela”
Do you still want some more?

so if i say do not vote for this person because he wont visit the constitutency as he has no attachement to the area, does that become tribal? kiki ukose mune. It seems you are digging for small silly reasons to label the upnd tribal. No mention of tribe in any of your accusations. Your SG is on record of saying “tongas”. Tonga is a tribe. luapula is not a tribe. get it young man? very dull

Very good aticle but am disapointed with the first coment. Such coments & pipo are danger to our country. When can some pipo learn to coment as the main story is? Some times, we should put politics aside when someting afecting our lives most is being debeted & we try to find a best & comon solution to beter our land.

@biko-Never you bury your head in the sand like an ostrich-NEZ is just being real & level headed,no pretence here, the truth is that under PF & Fred Mmembe,Zambia has been balkanished & polarised more than ever on tribal lines (something anathema to the annals of Zambian politics & appointments)

@The Civilized Sam: I may be wrong, but I doubt the problem of tribalism and tribal-favoritism is any more acute during PF rule than before. isn’t it during Mwanawasa’s Presidency that the famous “FAMILY TREE” was coined and took root?
Mwanawasa may not have encouraged tribalism per se, but sure his appointments were seen as tribal by citizen from others parts of Zambia. The same way Sata’s appointments were seen as tribal by certain citizens from other parts of Zambia. So, my point is that TRIBALISM in Zambia is usually in the eyes of the beholder.
Trust me when I say this; even if HH/UPND was to win elections next year, you can be rest assured that HH’s appointments won’t be short of critics. And you can be 100% sure that accusations of tribal-appointments will be everywhere. This is why, in my humble opinion, think that promotion of TRIBALISM in Zambia is a losing proposition. Those who try to ride on the back of tribalism to get into power today will themselves be consumed by the same beast tomorrow.
Our old man, KK, understood this reality in Zambian politics very well. His coining of the ONE ZAMBIA ONE NATION motto was without merit—it was with deep thinking, self introspection and King Solomon’s kind of wisdom!!!

My problem is comment based on insufficient backing evidence. Now if we look at the voters in 2016 it will be 50% under 18yrs that recently got and getting NRCs and have no history of the successes and failures that led to changes in past govts. That’s why 2016 seems tricky for the opposition. Tribalism is not the main issue here but Tribe dominance and assertiveness over each other. While some want to be recognized others are busy belittling others..Where is ONE ZED ONE BIG FAMILY? Nonsense!!!!! Shaa

Our founding father KK, successfully united the country under the motto, “One Zambia, One Nation”. His appointments to the cabinet were tribally balanced. Am sure that @NEZ will for once agree with me on this one, because he (nez) has vast experience having worked at very senior level in the civil service. By following the footsteps of KK, His Excellency ECL, has emulated the First Presido and has managed to tribally balance his cabinet, bearing in mind gender sensitivity. People extol Mazoka because his politics were all embracing, unlike hh who remained as silent as a shrine, when some senile old man at hh’s rally in Choma declared that this was the time for a tonga to go to state house! Is’nt silence consent? I challenge you @NEZ, your memory mudala, seems to failing you, are you becoming senile? Mark my words, am not insulting you, am just posing a question! You should be able to remember that not to long ago both Patrick Chisanga and Sakwiba Sikota were hounded out of upnd and both of them cried that tribalism was rife in upnd. Your hh never, and not anywhere, did he refute the tribal coinage of upnd by the two gentlemen, as the reason for their exiting upnd! Hh as usual was silent! @NEZ you have parked your PhD, in your suitcase instead of passing on your knowlesge to the young generation! Quiet honestly, you should be lecturing at a university, instead of locking yourself in your study, blogging all day, insulting and getting insulted by boys and girls young enough to be your grand-children! You are a shame unto yourself! Am not insulting you, am just telling you the truth, mudala! Better you face the truth than live a lie! Are you afraid of facing intelligent boys and girls in a lecture-theatre? Surely by now, you should be a professor and an authority in your field of study! Unfortunately, you prefer to blog 24/7! You are wasting your time, your money, and your mental energies, supporting a man who shall never win a presidential election! Viva H.E. ECL!! Viva!! Abash hh!!

please we know that Mazoka formed UPND after failing to fight inside MMD for the sole purpose of ending perceived bemba dominance of politics. All founders have said that with one accord. it is not a matter of a tribe segregating another. it is about a tribe which has set itself to be entitled to rule more than any other because:
1. ndiswe bene cishi. ‘we are the owners of the land.’
2.one tribe has dominated us too long. it is our time
3.we were dribbled at independence
Is this the revolution you are talking about based on tribal lies? because you are not the owners of the land. bembas have not dominated politics at any time

I agree with you cishi i tend to wonder where it extends.I was surprised when i made a trip to choma week after presidential by election the common folks i spoke to from mazabuka to choma blaming bembas for stealing hh’s vote. Some people like nez want bury there heads in sand and give excuses for there tribal party continue exposing them my brother..

I wonder where those of us who have intermarried fall- our children cannot even utter our languages and people talk of tribalism. It is a shame that young ones who have never been to their villages and cant even trace their lineage talk of tribalism! Let us not be used by politicians whose intentions are only to get to state house and we are left with a stupid smile that our candidate won!
