Confusion Mars Chuundu Meeting, Tongas Fight Amongst Themselves

THE much anticipated “Chuundu Chaitwa” meeting of the Tonga people in Monze yesterday ended in confusion after fights erupted among the delegates.
Tempers flared after a representative of Senior Chief Monze asked the gathering to wait for the meeting between the chiefs and President Lungu before coming up with resolutions.
This angered the youths who accused the chiefs of being bought by the Patriotic Front (PF) against the interests of their own people.
According to impeccable witnesses at the scene, the youths were further incensed after the organisers refused to give them a chance to address the gathering.
This prompted a fight between the youths who wanted to mount the podium and those who wanted to keep them away.
Other delegates joined in the fight accusing the youths of having been sponsored by the PF to cause confusion.
The police, however, managed to quell the confusion.
Some people were injured and the meeting was stopped for some time before it proceeded to make resolutions.
Meanwhile, the committee of the Chuundu Chaitwa meeting of the Tonga people says it has believed in unity since independence in 1964, CHOMBA MUSIKA reports.
Speaking when he read the resolutions at the end of the meeting yesterday, convenor Vincent Malambo said: “We believe in the unitary state and the talk of secession has never been part of our agenda; we value the peace our forefathers fought for. Our chiefs who expressed anger at Mr Chama’s (PF secretary-general Davies Chama) statement have never publicly or privately spoken of secession because they value national unity,” Mr Malambo said.
He called on citizens to nurture and guard jealously the “One Zambia One Nation” motto.
And another convenor, Dr Kabeta Muleya, said the people of Southern Province are peaceful and non-tribal.
And committee chairperson Edson Hamakowa dispelled media assertions that the Chuundu Chaitwa meeting had been cancelled.
“There were reports on radio that this meeting was not going to take place, this was done by people who want to disturb our meeting and we shall not allow any person to speak over issues that are not part of our agenda. Those are the same people misleading others,” Mr Hamakowa said.

The problem Southern Province has is that politically, they have no influence on PF.What I mean is that if for instance PF does not yield to the demand that Kambwili,Chama and Ms Mumbi be dismissed, there is absolutely no sanctions they can impose on PF as a Party. In the January 2015 Presidential elections,Edgar Lungu was given 20,937 votes against HH’s 272,187 votes. The overall difference between Edgar Lungu’s national total of 807,925 votes as against HH’s 780,168 votes is 27,757 votes. So if you remove all the votes from Southern province which EL got ( 20,937 ),HH still gets hammered by 6,820 votes. The question is how will Southern Province influence PF?

This is good thing my Tonga brothers can do. Irrespective of tribe we are one and the same.Fred Mmembe want to divide Zambia by writing wrong things which I know he will pay the price. Any meaningful Zambian should denounce the irresponsible writing of Fred Mmembe

Thats wat i know about real tongas. They are peaceful people. Tongas in the media are the ones promoting tribalism. Tongas come on, real bembas like u because of our history of one zambia one nation. Thank you imaging winners in the interest of the nation. Its true the country is going through economic problems. We can remove p.f and put hh but we can do that as a united nation and not the opposite

Most of these tongas just destroy even the little chances HH may have in 2016!!such meetings like “chuundu chaitwa” only confirms that tongas are tribal!!SO WHAT HAVE THEY ACHIEVED?NOTHING!!DAVIS CHAMA IS STILL PF SG AND MUMBI PHIRI WOULD STILL BE PF DEPUTY SG!!WHILE PF WILL CONTINUE GROWING MINUS TONGA VOTES!!SO IN THE END,ITS UPND AND HH WHO ARW LOSING POPULARITY!!I FOR ONE WOULD NEVER VOTE FOR HH DUE TO THIS TRIBAL TAG ON HIS BACK!!

  25. Analyst   July 21, 2015 at 9:31 am

who is tribal a person who votes for good, dynamic and visionary leader and a person who votes for static, drunkard and visionless leader.

If tongas are tribal, then why are bembas and nyanjas not voting for HH. this tell us that all tribes in Zambia are tribal. It is therefore wrong to pinpoint one tribe as tribal.

who is tribal a person who doesn’t want to speak other tribes’ language and a person who joins in other languages. Bembas and Nyanjas despite all the leaders you vote for you are still poor and live in abject poverty. you are tooooooo lazy to work and comprehend realities.

Its good, folks that this seemingly has come to a close. The lesson learnt is that those in positions of authority should be mindful of whatever they say, where-ever they are.Silly comments should be left to us bloggers!

No Tongas are good people please it just depends with the personality of a partcular individual. Am Mambwe and I mix with anyone regardless of where they come from. Stop condemning and please we can do it let us embrase the spirit of togetherness in Zambia and learn to access issuess based on merit and not the changanya way.

    May God Bless us ALL
