The number of adults accessing Anti Retroviral Treatment (ART) in Mongu now stands at 10, 986 while that of children is 617.
And Mongu District Health Office has increased malaria coverage through vector control measures with either Long-Lasting Insecticide-treated Nets (LLIN) or Indoor Residual Spraying (IRS) in a bid to soon reduce malaria deaths to near zero and achieve a malaria-free Mongu District and Zambia by 2020.
Mongu District Commissioner Susiku Kamona disclosed this when he officiated at a Mongu District Health Planning meeting for the 2016-2018 Medium Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF).
Mr. Kamona added that government was committed to annually increasing the drug budget coupled with strengthening of the health systems through implementation of the Essential Medical Logistics Improvement Programme (EMLIP).
He said in this regard, the Ministry of Health had opened a Medical Stores Limited hub in Mongu to completely mitigate shortages of essential medicines and medical supplies.
The District Commissioner also said that the Mongu District health sector focus for 2016 among others was to complete construction works of Mongu District Hospital and four health posts in the district and rehabilitate some facilities.
Meanwhile, Mongu District Medical Officer Francis Liywalii said that health centres in the district were facing a lot of challenges due to inadequate funding.
