27-year-old Tambu Makinzi, who was suffering from chondrosarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer, has had a successful operation to remove it.
She began to suspect that something was wrong with her when she began to constantly suffer from constant headaches and weeks later, her forehead began to swell.
While the mother-of-one received treatment for the cancer, it returned earlier this year – and proved to be more life-threatening than ever.
The tumour covered her entire face, her nasal and jaw bones, displaced her left eye, and even robbed her of a sense of smell.
And after arriving for treatment in London having flown 6,000 miles from Cape Town, South Africa – doctors warned Tambu that she had just months to live.
Remarkably, Tambu was cured after surgeon Professor Iain Hutchison performed a complex operation which lasted over 35 hours.
He led a team responsible for removing 2kg of tumour, before using Tambu’s back muscle and rib to rebuild her face.
A second operation was needed to get rid of dying tissue, but she’s now on the road to recovery, and her remarkable story is set to be the subject of a Channel 5 documentary.
Tambu was finally discharged from hospital after a nine-week stay in hospital, and said she was slowly ‘getting better’.
‘I can swallow, eat foods, but it is still a bit sore.
‘And I can speak to my husband and daughter for the first time in months.
‘I miss them a lot.’
Tambu is now expected to make a full recovery – and can relish the prospect of watching her daughter Pearl grow up, alongside her husband.

SAD for our beloved sister. Under President Hakainde Moses Hichilema, wasting money evacuating to other countries will be a thing of the past. Alot of Zambians are dying of curable illnesses because of the poor and failed leadership of president Beer. The Beer Man does not care for the health services of this country as he knows that he has the privilege to be treated outside Zambia even for collapsing due to over drinking.
2016 is coming and i urge all Zambians to vote out the useless drunkard.

Hildah malama I concur with you on that point. Under PF only the priviliged like lungu are getting effective medical care while the majority continue to suffer and lose their close friends and family. It seems zambian medical facilities have become worse since 2011. We ask you all to do the right thing in 2016 and vote upnd because we will provide Free quality medical care for the poor alongside private medical facilities for those who can afford to pay • Improved and modern medical facilities (rehabilitation and building of more clinics and hospitals supported by good technical, research and development capabilities) closer to the people. • readily available and safe medicines in clinics and hospitals and not the current habit of only giving prescriptions to those seeking medical care; • vigorous fight against Malaria and HIV/AIDS, in particular, improved management and increased funding for prevention, treatment and care; • improved but affordable medical schemes and insurance; • better pay, housing, training, retraining and other conditions of service for all medical personnel.

Thanks be to God that she is recovering. She will live to testify, we look forward to seeing our Zambian hospitals handling such cases.
