Why Mukuka Mulenga Has Failed To Shine In The PSL

Mulenga-MukukaBy Ivy Mumba Lengwe
Before he was signed on by Sundowns in August 2013, Mukuka Mulenga was the most happening player in the Zambian Super League.

He was named 2012 Zambia footballer of the year and COSAFA 2013 MVP. His new coach Pitso Mosimane was all praises for the then 20 year Kabwe Warriors groomed player. He called him “General” who is quick and with brilliant one-twos.

I also remember someone even calling him the next Charles Musonda but when i was asked about whether he would live up to expectations, i had my reservations and the following were my observations.

I was concerned with Mukuka’s narrow circumference of vision. Let me simplify this, great midfield players develop a second set of eyes so they do not need to look at the ball when in posession. That gives them a wide circumference of vision and can pick any player with a pass without looking at the ball.

If you have watched Mukuka, he is always looks at the ball and that narrows his vision and that is why his greatest quality is one-two play as Pitso Mosimane rightly said.

And that also expains why he was shifted from playing in the center of midfield and pushed wide. It is beacuse as a wide midfielder, he does not require a wide vision as a central midfielder.

So unless this issue is dealt with, it will be difficult for Mukuka to hit the punchline performance that he was hyped about.

But this is probably why we shud start developing our players as early as possible beacuse vision is better developed during SSG stage which is between the ages of 8 and 14.

This is great advice I agree with Lengwe 100%. His observation is correct. Just call the FAZ technical director or his coach so that they talk to him. We might need his services and its better we help him improve his game. He is still young.

Injury and his lightweight status has contributed. I feel he should hit the gym more often to gain strength and muscle weight especially during the off season. And eat high protein diet my man.

Mukuka is a quick Player but he lacks Pace?speed, i being a Power supporter way back, i Knew he was going to have difficulties Reaching the greatest Level, At some point fans started seyn Sitali gets to the Bench – i Personally refused coz then Sitali was a robast Player but mukuka is betteroff a striker than a typical Number 8, he has skill but jst cant run around with the ball without Passing it over, i Personaly recomended jst after Mukuka and F.Nyainde Played abt 3 games for Power dat Nyainde is better placed in midfield and mukuka as a striker and dats wat has worked for both mukuka med a mark at Power as a striker and Felix me a mark at Nchanga as a Midfielder bcoz his heard is owez looking at the Ball aswell. Full time Power Supporter!
