Police in Lusaka have arrested 16 suspected United Party for National Development (UPND) cadres who were among the 25 that allegedly participated in an unlawful procession with Chongwe member of Parliament Sylvia Masebo on Tuesday.
Lusaka Province police commissioner Charity Katanga said the 16 cadres will appear in the Lusaka Magistrate’s Court today.
“We have arrested the remaining 16, out of the 25 suspected UPND cadres, and they will appear in court tomorrow (today),” she said in an interview.
Ms Katanga said the 16 will appear in court together with seven other cadres who were arrested at Lusaka Central Police Station on Wednesday for riotous behaviour while police were questioning Ms Masebo.
On Tuesday, Police arrested Ms Masebo as she with some suspected UPND cadres were allegedly making an illegal procession, contrary to the Public Order Act.
Ms Katanga said the MP and her supporters were intercepted on Independence Avenue after they attempted to walk from the Lusaka Magistrate’s Court complex to the law-maker’s home in Ibex Hill.
Ms Masebo was again re- arrested with four others for escaping lawful custody.
She pleaded not guilty to two counts of escaping from lawful custody and conducting an unauthorised procession in which she is jointly charged with four others.
The five have since been released on a K10,000 bail each in their own recognisance on condition that they produce two working sureties.

Finally people have realized that the police is now just a bunch of PFool cadres and can’t do anything, now calling upon the Zambia army, unfortunately they have being tasked to start taking care of wild animals, because zawa looks like has failed too, so my friend never drag our army into such political nonsense.

Ruling parties cadre behavior and biased police attitude towards them in the past has created this militia approach to political mobilization and pose by the UPND. UPND supporters had for a long time been bullied and humiliated especially by PF cadres. UPND leaders complained but both the police and ruling party leaders turned a deaf ear. When UPND warned of fighting back the police threatened arrests while ruling party leaders labeled them violent. The bully calling the victim violent while the head teacher threatened to expel the victim for saying one day they will defend themselves. Now look at those UPND cadres in fatigues. In those years it would not have been the police arresting those UPND cadres but PF cadres beating them up. Not anymore. Now, what next ba Stella?

What do you mean bomb ni boma? Zambia became independent in 1964 and we have been a democracy since 1991/2. It is people like you that that creates dictators. We chose leaders, they do not chose us. Leaders are answerable to us and not the other way round as in a monarchy or dictatorship which Zambia is not. My concern is the dressing of party cadres? Will they discard that garb when their party is in power? Hope so.
