A five-year study of teens and young adults found that every extra hour they stayed up during the school week added an alarming 2.1 more points to their BMI (body mass index).
Exercise, the amount of time they spent in front of computer or TV screens and the actual number of hours they slept made no difference. The study of more than 3,300 participants showed that teenagers who pulled late-nighters may want to hit the sack earlier in a bid to fight obesity. Researcher Lauren Asarnow from an American university said, “These results highlight adolescent bedtimes, not just total sleep time, as a potential target for weight management during the transition to adulthood.” Bedtime management in adolescents is crucial to weight management, the researchers say. “If you’re going to bed an hour later, over time you could be shifting BMI categories from normal to overweight,” Asarnow said.
