Man Handed 1 Year For Stealing 12 Goats
The Kabwe Magistrate’s Court has slapped a one-year-jail sentence on a 27-year-old man for stealing 12 goats.
Before magistrate Mwiinga Simanya, was Maybin Katampi, who pleaded guilty to one count of stock theft.
The court found that Katampi had stolen the animals, worth K2,660 from Branda Chikandi on August 29, this year, in Kabwe..
Facts presented by public prosecutor, Henry Katwishi, are that on August 29, this year, Ms Chikandi, a farmer, locked her 12 goats in a kraal at about 17:00 hours.
Mr Katwishi said at about 20:00 hours, Ms Chikandi went to sleep. However, the following morning, she discovered that all her 12 goats were missing.
The court heard that the complainant conducted a search for her goats but to no avail, and therefore, reported the matter to Chowa Police Station.
Mr Katwishi told the court that police investigations led to the arrest of Katampi.
Upon being interrogated by police, Katampi admitted having stolen the goats.
In mitigation, Katampi told the court that it was the first time he was committing such an offence, and therefore the court should exercise leniency.
“I did not know what I was doing. I am a father with three children who I have left staying with their step-mother,” he said.
Ms Simanya told Katampi that she would exercise leniency on him being a first offender, but she needed to punish him for the offence he had committed.
“I sentence you to 12 months imprisonment, and you have the right of appeal to the High Court within 14 days, if you are not happy with my sentence,” Ms Simanya said.

Sentenced to 12 months for stealing 12 goats meaning he gonna serve a month for each goat. At least 2 yrs could have been better.

why not do some manual in the near by farm and get some cash for yourself then feed your family infact 12 months is not enough yo were suppose to get 36 months.
