A 76-YEAR-OLD Livingstone Catholic Church bishop yesterday told a magistrate’s court how he was conned out of K750 by a man who claimed that the body found within his premises was for his relative.
This is in a case in which David Chiyaba, 26, a businessman of house number 11 Namatama Extension, Livingstone, is charged with obtaining money by false pretences.
It is alleged that on October 2 this year, Chiyaba obtained K750 cash from Bishop Raymond Mpenzele by lying that he was going to buy a coffin and needed money for transport to ferry the body.
Bishop Mpenzele told magistrate Michael Mulalelo that two days before the accused collected the money, his cook informed him about a body that was found in his premises.
“I was called by my cook that a body had been found at my residence. I went there and I saw the body. I instructed the people to report the matter to the police,” he said.
Bishop Mpenzele said two days after reporting the matter to police, a man came to his residence claiming that the dead person was his relative and asked for financial help to enable him transport the body to Mumbwa for burial.
He said Chiyaba asked for K1,000 to top up on the money that he claimed he had.
“I told him that it was too expensive to bury the body in Mumbwa, ‘why not bury in Livingstone’? I told him that I could only give him K750,” he said.
Bishop Mpenzele said he was shocked to later learn that Chiyaba was a conman and had been arrested for another case.
“I was shocked to see this man at the court premises in the other case where he has been charged with written facts to murder,” he said.

Interesting though sad to that lost life. One thing first was to invite the police to investigate how the body found itself at the premise of the Bishop, and then who murdered the man. It is interesting that the man in question comes to ask for assistance alone from the Bishop without any company, to me the Bishop wanted to dispose off the body from his yard quickly. In fact if this purported conman came with someone or two, it would have been easier to pin him than the way it is. Be prayerful man of God.
