Over 400 MCM Miners ‘Choose’ To Go

OVER 400 miners at Mopani Copper Mines (MCM) have opted for voluntary separation, Mineworkers Union of Zambia (MUZ) general-secretary Joseph Chewe has said.
Mr Chewe said in an interview in Kitwe yesterday that over 400 miners at MCM opted for voluntary separation, which the Glencore-owned mining company offered as part of the debt reduction strategy.
Mr Chewe, however, said MUZ is disturbed by reports that MCM is allegedly putting pressure on miners to go on voluntary separation.
He said MUZ is now looking forward to President Lungu’s five-day working visit to Kitwe to help avert job losses in the mining sector.
Mr Chewe also said there is need for Government to increase its stake in mining companies because some investors are proving to be unreliable whenever there is a slump in copper prices on the international market.
He said it is disappointing that MCM has gone ahead to reduce labour by putting pressure on workers to go on voluntary separation.
MCM recently wrote to Government over its plans to lay off over 3,800 workers but the request was rejected by Government and union leaders.
“Mopani has gone ahead to lay off workers through voluntary separation. Over 400 workers, including those who were supposed to retire in December, have lost jobs through this mode of reducing labour by Mopani. This is another learning curve for Zambia.
“As a country, we need to increase our stake in the mines to avoid this problem of seeing these private mining companies retrenching workers whenever the sector faces challenges,” Mr Chewe said.
Efforts to get a comment from MCM public relations manager Cephas Sinyangwe proved futile.

“As a country, we need to increase our stake in the mines to avoid this problem of seeing these private mining companies retrenching workers whenever the sector faces challenges,” Mr Chewe said.

1.As long as Zambia has no controlling interest in the mines it will be difficult to influence anything.
    2. If Zambia gets a majority state, can we manage to run the mines and buy off the shares from the current holders. Do we have the money, time and skills?

Mistake was made in the initial contracts. Unfortunately since Zambia is a signatory to International protocols, we cannot repossess these mines without being blacklisted.

No body is putting pressure on anybody. NEZ things like this have always happened in the Mining Industry, only a warped mind will deny this.

Voluntary separation is normal in the mines. It has been there for a long time.Infact, the benefits are more than resigning or being fired.

NEZ it is not wise to use such words like “FOOLS” to colleagues with divergent views. Respect everyone regardless.Educated people do not brag about their Education and you just need to dig more information about the Founder servant of UPND late Anderson Kambela Mazoka to know that Education and pomposity have no place in Leadership. He was a people person and ate from the Canteen with workers. He rolled up his sleeves to dip his own cattle at Teba Farm and slept in huts. His Bestfriend was Peart Siwale a non Tonga and hated tribalism with a passion! I worked for him as his PA and I cannot find anyone in UPND that has his qualities. He went to Harvard University the highest Institutions of learning and I bet you did not know. He listened to both young and old and respected every human being on this Earth. He revered every President and never called them Names at all! Learn to keep your Education to yourself and enjoy it whilst it lasts! Some of us on this Platform are your Mothers and we are crying for Mother Zambia day and night for God’s Help. At the end of each Election Zambia still remains Zambia and its people Zambians that co-exist. We are family. God Bless You.

karyn you must be a lost person. I am sure majority of people here know mazokas biography. If anything I was related to the man. For your information I am not tonga so I do not understand why you are going on about tribe. Nothing I post has anyhtng to do with tribe. The only idiots posting about tribe are the pf who are insecure and are using that to dent upnd. From the way you are blogging one can easily tell that since you lost your PA job you got hungry and lost any integrity in you. You have been reduced to a mere pf cadre who cannot be objective to say the least

God Bless you and thank you! Am sure you do not know much about him then because how many years have passed since his demise and I am a Customer services Manager at an International Company and what relative who has a myopic and foul mouth calling pipo IDIOTS! He taught us to speak kindly of each other and avoid hate speeches that are for less mortals! I love PF for their original ideologies of Pro-poor policies and I am not ashamed to state this and their humility exhibited by the President. There is still room for improvement in him, but let us respect him! I do not know any relative of his who sounds like you!I am sure he would have no time for you and would probably ignore your calls to his office. Bitterneess is a poison. Get rid of it

That is owesome advise for you Nez my fellow blogger. And you wonder why Mazoka scoped CB and LSK overwhelmingly. There was some thing about him which was more than tribe. Sad he died but I am sure he could have been the next best president Zambia had ever had. Just his election could have raised investor confidence ten fold.I saw it in the eyes of my fellow miners when Mazoka lost elections, there was a sense of hopelessness and gloomy and when he died , be it whatever you guys are now calling it, any tribe they were teary, especially the miners I worked with. They revered Mazoka beyond tribe. Up to now some of them still do.They still live in the what if mood. I am now working in the mines of SA but still proudly Zambian. I will never insult nez, I can only challenge his views because in the end we are one striving for a better Zambia☺happy Halloween lol😈

My Dear Nez you just have to ask Hon Christine Mutinta Mazoka and you will be told the truth. I have seen their children grow Machenje, Passina, Chiko, Junior Mazoka well mannered, cultured and humble! I used to take care of them from Babies and they considered me a part of family so if you know Late AKMazoka from reading his Biography then you are warped and probably are part of his family now, after he passed on which I think he should be ashamed of himself and turning in his Grave. Save your rhetoric. Thanks Trump. The man was extraordinary, he could not even find words for a quarrel and if he argued he was the first to apologize even when he was RIGHT! He knew mining like farming from a Diamond drill bit to Anglo American MD Central Africa a Man from Mungwi school spoke Bemba like he was not Tonga! Generous without cause, a Father who sat you down to listen and learn! Which relative are you?I have no cause to read his Biography because if I did I would be disappointed to find out he left a lot of parts as he was very poor at describing himself!! I forgive you Son!

karyn thank you for that irrelevant information that has no bearing on our political future. You seem to be the type of person that is locked in the past. Mazoka is gone and nothing will bring the man back. The wise tend to move on and achieve more. We do not have time to start reminsicing about the dead and wishing. Wishes are just that.. wishes. Me being related to mazoka is not a privilige or make me better than anyone else. The same applies to your allegations of being his so called PA. What i want to hear from you is what your party PF will do about the various probelms we are facing. We in upnd do not have time to start dreaming about the past and wishing. This is time to work. Wake up please. As a famous man said:let the dead bury the dead, i am a living man i got work to do
