ZESCO Limited is set to increase the hours of load shedding following a further drop in water levels at Kariba Dam and Kafue Gorge.
ZESCO Spokesperson Henry Kapata has explained to QFM News that the power utility company is also trying to safeguard machinery from damage through this measure.
Mr. Kapata says the power utility company is being very careful in the utilization of the remaining waters.
He has also advised Zambians to embrace the use of energy saving bulbs in order to help power.
Mr Kapata explains that when the company distributes about 1, 300 energy saving bulbs the country is expected to save about 50 Mega Watts of power.

Why can’t they just make it 24 hours of loadshedding so that we forget about ZESCO?We are fed up with them.

Lungu should go and force them to increase water levels and Kambwili will say its global even in Brazil there is load shedding.

Am no economist, electrician, plumber nor pathological lier. But lets get the sense from the nonesense. We have obviously paid billions to import electricity from our neighbors so that we boost the indistries here then again we are bringing back load shedding which will affect the industries and that will mean we keep paying for electricity from neighbors which we are not using. Does it make sense. Is this a sign of a policy gone wrong……..help me on this one bolggers

My man listen, Of the total installed Electricity Generation Capacity of Zambia of 2,347 MW, hydropower is the most important energy source in the country with 2,259 MW (96%), followed by diesel contributing about 4% to the national energy supply. Zambia demand for energy has been rising more than 6% per year for the past decade in the country, particularly in the mining, manufacturing and agriculture sectors.
According to the Zambia Development Agency (ZDA), the demand for electricity in the country has been growing at an average of about 3%, or between 150 and 200 MW, each year. Given these factors, the demand for electricity in the country has exceeded 2,000 MW in 2015. However, there has not been any major addition to the country’s generation capacity in the last 20-30 years despite a growing demand for power over the years. Zambia is also part of the Southern Africa Power Pool (SAPP), in which the annual electricity consumption reaches 50,000 MW per year, with an installed capacity of 55,000MW. With 40% of the water resources in the Southern African Development Community (SADC), Zambia has about 6,000 MW unexploited hydropower potential, while only about 2,259 MW (37%) has been developed. In addition to water reserves, Zambia has abundant renewable and non-renewable energy resources, including: – Industrial minerals such as coal – Agricultural land to support bio-fuels – Ample forest for biomass – Abundant wind for wind energy – Long and intense hours of annual sunlight to support solar energy generation.
With all this energy potential Zambia has, the country is still owing some of the electricity import from other countries and possibly the money we send (to import) gets taken as payment for unpaid bills and Zesco has no option but go back to more load shedding.

Electricity increases is not for common good but merely to mean the extravagant wage bill. It is not going for system improvement. THE INCREASE IS NOT NECESSARY.
Mambwe
November 3, 2015 at 5:14 pm
The increase in tariffs is so that other power generating players can come on board eg solar & thermal. Government has realised that we need other players in this industry hence the increase in tarriffs. it’s an illusion that government isn’t working
