PATRIOTIC Front (PF) central committee member Frank Bwalya has appealed to Zambians to support President Lungu’s appeal to the mines not to fire workers unnecessarily.
Father Bwalya (below) said in a statement yesterday that President Lungu must be supported for opposing the behaviour of some mining companies who are rushing to laying off workers when they experience operational challenges.
“President Lungu’s challenge to Mopani Copper Mines to hand over the mine to the government if they have failed to run it should be supported by all patriotic Zambians because it provides the right framework and philosophy in dealing with foreign investors,” Fr Bwalya said.
He said President Lungu’s position in opposing the behaviour of some mining companies is justified because they make huge profits when the price of copper is high.
“We accept the reality that foreign investors come to our country to make money. But we should never accept a situation where they would reap huge profits but abandon our people at the sight of challenges triggered by trends in the global economy,” Fr Bwalya said.
He said mining companies should demonstrate loyalty to people who work hard to make them generate huge profits when the price of copper is good.
“When they make windfall profits, they cheat and refuse to share the benefits with the miners.
“It is against this background that President Lungu’s bold stance should be commended and supported so that foreign investors, especially mining companies, can learn to treat us fairly,” Fr Bwalya said.
And STEVEN MVULA in Lusaka reports that Zambia National Students Union (ZANASU) says the meeting it held with President Lungu while he was on the Copperbelt yielded results and pacified the students at higher institutions of learning.
ZANASU is the mother body of all students unions’ at institutions of higher learning.
The organisation’s vice-president Prince Ndoyi said the students are grateful that President Lungu took time to listen to their concerns while he was working from the Copperbelt.
“The meeting with the President has brought a great deal of hope amongst students. President Lungu showed concern over issues prevailing in higher learning institutions,” Mr Ndoyi said.
He said the primary purpose of the meeting was to exchange ideas on how best to resolve the challenges being faced by higher learning institutions.
Mr Ndoyi said the students expressed concern over bursary increment, firing of lecturers and expulsion of students, among other issues.
“As ZANASU, we are deeply elated with the seriousness President Lungu took on our issues and how open he was to admit where government had failed and how he was quick to instruct necessary government wings for intervention,” he said.
Mr Ndoyi said the President also advised the students to avoid demonstrations when they are aggrieved.
“President Lungu is indeed a humble man, but he is resolute. He is a father,” he said.
Mr Ndoyi urged students across the country to embrace dialogue and proper channels of communication.

My worry is how will this failing government manage the profit making venture when they have evidently failed to run the economy from already established basic governance and policies? They have failed to utilize huge taxes/money generated from so many sectors to serve citizens lives in these current pathetic economic predicaments. How will they manage a profit making venture?? ZCCM is just one an example of the eminent danger especially with clumsy hands of pf. It goes without saying that the current power deficit does not commensurate with desired maximum production for operations and sustenance in the mines. Sustainable conducive policies are what are to be provided as opposed to Kmbwili bulldozing formulae when you know your capacity is precarious. There is no point in stopping mines to lay off employees because they already offloaded so many back on the streets. Your so called working from the cope-belt was instead more of campaigns reacting to criticism. You missed the golden chance……..

Yes it sounds good but what u should know is that government has no capacity to run the mines but should bring credible investors and partner with them.Mining is an expensive business which requires technocrats.to run it.Remember we failed to run ZCCM because of political interference in the mining business.Let the government partner with investors and mornitor their activities instead of going to sleep leaving them manipulating things.

emmanuel
November 5, 2015 at 11:28 am
Little or nothing has changed because this government as I said earlier has gone to sleep, leaving crooked investors cheating us and manipulating things with impunity.Look at the work ZRA does. When it comes to auditing these mining houses,do you think ZRA has a capacity to audit such firms?Government should put in place measures to curb. trend of siphoning away of much needed resources by crooked investors.Ngafyafilikwa change policy on mining and introduce a 51% share in these mining firms

We had state owned companies like ZCBC, NIEC, MWAISENI……just shops but as government they were complexities that made us transform niec to SHoprite and look how much employment and improvement to the economy shoprite has brought, Now Mopani mines are you sure ………….leave it in private hands because us zambians are cunning we take over the mines and you will be finding copper ore on the display cabinets of employes and government or even those huge spare tyres will be used as chairs in sitting rooms. No let the mines be in private hands.

Mining is not like running a shop, even shops the govt failed to run remember we used to have NIEC and ZCBC. Edgar should be using his brains and stop this Mr Good Man mentality to win votes. Does the Govt has the money to run mines? Giving management to mines shall mean getting the elite even richer as they will start putting their relatives in strategic positions and loot the mines. Besides, what makes Lungu to think the challenges the mines have will end if he takes over? Thats being irresponsible and naive. What are the fundamental problems: Devalued Kwacha, low power supply, low commodity price of copper, poor or low FDI etc. So how will he fix these if he has already shown ineptness in running the economy?

How can people come into your country, you give them business to run and they fire the native people? What does the contract say? Mr. Lungu is a lawyer and he knows better. Mining deals were awarded fraudulently and the owners care less about local people. Unfortunately, the same local people will vote for the government that is at the helm of malpractices that are dehumanizing the local people. My fellow Zambians, are we going to keep patronizing this government when they can’t even negotiate the basics of the contracts regarding our own natural resource? And when an insightful comment like this is posted, it will get a chorus of insults. Zambia has been kabovalized and the investors are benefiting from the chaos because there is no credible leadership to chat the nation forward….Do you think our patriarchs like Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe or Harry Mwanga Nkhumbula, Mainza Chona or Mama Chikamoneka would rhyme with the status quo?

If we ran our mines from 1965 to 1991 when Zambia had less capabilities to do so what about this time when the streets are flooded with graduates. We just need to relook at what went wrong and how best can we approach the business so that its viable and adding value to the lives of Zambians.

If we cant the run the mines as a Nation then we can as well just close the higher institutions running Degrees, diplomas etc in mining related universities and colleges. It as well mean that we produce half baked or text book engineers, mets, etc.Its a shame to think thus.

There were no hand-outs. We worked for our money. KK saw the success of RCM compared to NCCM which was under Francis Kaunda then he decided to merge the two companies and that is where the trouble started. The inefficiency of NCCM creeped in. Infact for us ZCCM stood for ZAMBIA CIPUBA CHAONALU MAINI.
