Don’t Play Victim, ZRA Tells Post Newspaper

ZRA-investigators-The-Post-NEWSPAPER-624x415THE Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) says The Post newspaper should pay the K16 million statutory debt instead of insinuating that the authority received instructions to seek payment the newspaper owes.
ZRA said it conducts its operations without any undue influence from anyone, contrary to assertions by The Post that State House had a hand in the ‘raid’ on the newspaper.
The authority said in a statement issued by its communications unit in Lusaka on Sunday that it operates without any political interference or any form of bias at any level.
ZRA advised all tax-payers to comply with the tax laws by paying their taxes on time to avoid penalties, interests, enforcement action and prosecution.
And the Authentic Advocates for Justice and Democracy (AAJD) says The Post should not blame President Lungu for failing to meet its tax obligations when the Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) demands payments.
AAJD executive director John Mulenga said it is criminal for any organisation operating in the country to knowingly evade tax because it feels it is ‘untouchable’.
Mr Mulenga said in an interview yesterday that those who are not paying tax knowingly are robbing Zambians of the economic benefits that they are supposed to enjoy.
He wondered how The Post expects Government to operate when it is failing to meet its tax obligations.
Mr Mulenga said failure to pay taxes sends wrong signals to foreign investors who might think it is the right thing to do in Zambia.
“If we do not pay tax, then what kind of picture are we painting to those that are coming to invest in Zambia,” Mr Mulenga said.
He said Government depends on the revenue it collects through ZRA and if certain companies or individuals opt not to pay tax, then what they are doing is a disservice to the country.
Mr Mulenga urged individuals supporting erring companies in terms of tax compliance to be sincere with themselves and the country.
He said some individuals, especially some politicians, should be principled not to talk ill of some policies simply because they don’t suit them at any given time.
On Sunday, State House said it is unreasonable, preposterous and outrageous in the extreme for the Post Newspaper to claim that demands for full settlement of tax obligations is a move to close it down.

According to Radio Phoenix 18 hours news yesterday, Kabimba has asked individual Zambians to contribute money and help The Post to pay this debt.I find this suggestion quite laughable. Individuals should now bail out a Company. Amazing.

I find individuals/political parties/organizations supporting the Post Newspaper that it is okay for them not to pay their Taxes, NAPSA for their employees and also the loan they borrowed from Zambians through DBZ to be of extreme low IQ and suffering from acute amnesia and political dementia.

All normal thinking citizens should support efforts to recover money owed to the Zambian people so that it can be channeled to developmental projects. The money owed to DBZ can be accessed by other business houses to grow their business and create employment opportunities for Zambians.

Actually, what has made HH not to go to statehouse, is his Tonga tribesmen. Every issue, they politicise it, and encourage others to vote for HH\UPND. Enlightened pipo like me we start wondering what would become of our country if this tribe is given the chance to rule. It can go and Zambia will remain. There are other progressive news papers on board and others are still coming. The post can fold and vanish in thin air who cares??

Everyone in zambia owes ZRA including those same chaps sent to THE POST its lust the matter of time they will start dancing. just wait and see. Let them ask there friends when they left GRZ where they were running with utuma complaints if it wasn’t THE POST which rescued them.

@NEZ, at times I admire your reasoning but on this one I beg to differ with you my bro. Even if there were many companies owing ZRA, I mean there’s no harm in starting with the Post. I also admire Kakolwe`s comments. He’s fair. Coz if Mumbi Phiri errors, he will point out the error (even though the 2 of u are in opposing camps). But for you, even if Membe is wrong (like in this case) you can’t point it out. Be fair my bro. FAZ is quasi gov’t and it was visited, Membe reported it but no one raised a finger. When it comes to the Post, it becomes political.

@NEZ, my brother! Once, you told me you ran businesses and employed many Zambian. I wonder if that is true now. Coz of your argument in this Mmembe case.
@Prophetic Objective fimofimo, you spend the whole day posting the same inapplicable rubbish for Mmembe? What has eaten into you?
    The judge kept quiet. Wise.
You boys are really extremely BASE! 7 months ago ZRA swung into action and touched everyone, as landlord, my takings pa monthend reduced by 10% because my tenants were educated to ‘withhold’ what is due to ZRA. My busses & taxis suffered the same. Soon even my pork farm will be visited. Whats so special about the post?

The Post Newspaper should just pay their tax period. I find it very fun for politician to even involve themselves in this issue. It doesn’t concern them if anything they are just exposing their lack of reasoning and proper thinking as leaders. No government will allow such a behavior shown by the post newspaper of not paying tax. Every individual/organization operating in the country must pay tax without exemption unless stated so according to the law of the land. This company is even luck that they have managed to hide from paying tax up to date. So politicians and their cadres must not involve themselves in this issue because this non political and we all pay tax monthly. There is no political party that will run the government without ZRA collecting tax from individuals/organization in Zambia.
