Dear Editor,
ALLOW me space in your paper to express my displeasure at the disorderly conduct by Zambia Police officers at Luckson Mapushi Police Post in Kamwala South, Lusaka.
On Tuesday, November 3, 2015, around 21:00 hours, a containerised truck driven by a Zimbabwean national hit into a Zesco overhead line conductor that crosses the road at the junction 100 metres from the police post, knocking down the neutral (the lowest conductor).
Upon noticing what had happened, police officers on duty chased after the driver, found him and locked him in cells.
The officers ordered him to pay K1,500, failure to which he would be taken to Zesco where he would be “requested to pay K3,000” instead.
Being a foreigner, the driver quickly obliged, paid K1,500 without a receipt and was released! Firstly, the Zesco power line under discussion is very low and there is no warning with regard to clearance.
Thankfully, on Thursday, November 5, 2015, I found Zesco Limited personnel replacing not only the damaged conductor but also changing the two poles on either side.
This is a good move but the inconvenience, payment to police and loss to both the conductor and the poles could have been avoided in the planning stage.
Secondly, the time was 21:00 hours and the area did not have power until 22:30 hours and punishing a man in that way was inhuman.
Thirdly, Zesco put people’s lives in danger both for truck drivers and households using this line if such happened when there was power.
I request Zesco Limited and Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) to investigate this matter. Let the officers pay back that money and since that Zimbabwean driver will not claim it, let the same money be used to buy paint for the very police post. It is dirty!
Also, confirm whether this matter was reported to Zesco by the same police officers, looking at the way they chased after the truck.

Why does this govt take long to act on simple issues like disciplining civil servants? How do you have DC who cant even write his name? pliz Mr lungu give us pipo who can work. Even transfers can help at times tho not the best option

ZESCO and ACC will need a witness for this event in order to have a strong case. Are you ready to help? By hiding your identity, you are already showing cowardice therefore can neither give a statement nor testify as witness. Abena Zambia ni ba mbuli.

Poverty a life of struggle under pf only means that the police have lost any integrity. To them the only way for one to right a wrong is by paying them. However without receipt one wonders where that money goes. With the police they are the judge legislator and enforcer. Typical under pf

Our friends in North Western Province say, “kyamutana nyama buta bwanji” meaning “what has deprived him meat is his gun”. Actually, what has made HH not to go to statehouse, is his Tonga tribesmen. Every issue, they politicise it, and encourage others to vote for HH\UPND. Enlightened pipo like me we start wondering what would become of our country if this tribe is given the chance to rule. The tenacity shown in support of their tribesman is not only worrying but also repugnant

Under unip we had humanism which influenced largely our way of life. Under mmd we had capitalism which again did the same. Under pf we have lack of vision and thinking. Again this is largely affecting many Zambians and you are a good example
