Pupil Jailed 18 Months For Stealing Bicycle

A MAGISTRATE’S court has sent a 19-year-old Grade Eight pupil to prison for 18 months imprisonment with hard labour for stealing a bicycle belonging to a fellow worshipper during a church service in Chingola.
The court found Michael Sinkala of Mikiloni area, Chiwempala, Chingola, guilty of theft.
When the matter came up for plea, Sinkala readily admitted the charge before magistrate Lomuti M’tonga.
Particulars of the offence are that Sinkala on April 19 this year in Chingola stole a mountain bicycle worth K400 belonging to Martin Lumumba at a Catholic church as congregants were worshipping inside.
Facts before the court were that the complaint had gone for a church service and left his bicycle outside the church.
when the service ended, the complainant discovered that the bicycle was missing and reported the matter to police.
The court heard that after some months he spotted the bike at Chiwempala market with a man who revealed that it had been sold to him by Sinkala.
The police apprehended Sinkala and charged him with theft.
Sinkala begged the court to exercise leniency on him because he was sorry for his actions.
“Your honour, I have learnt a lesson and will never repeat what I did. I am a pupil, so if you send me to prison my future will be ruined,” Sinkala said.
Mr M’tonga wondered why Sinkala could steal at a church.
“You went there to pray but you decided to steal from your church mate. What you did was very bad and you have to be punished.
“I have heard your mitigation and that you are a first offender, but you will not go scot-free. I will sentence you to 18 months imprisonment with hard labour. You should respect the house of God,” he said.
Mr Mtonga said that Sinkala has a right to appeal.
In the same court Mr M’tonga sentenced a 25-year-old man to three months imprisonment with hard labour for trafficking in 10 grammes of marijuana.
Mr M’tonga sentenced Goldwin Kainda of New Plots in Kasompe township after he pleaded guilty to the offence.
Kainda told the court that he used the drugs as medicine for his ears, but the magistrate dismissed the claim.
On October 3 this year Kainda trafficked in 10 grammes of marijuana, a product of cannabis sativa, without lawful authority.
Facts before the court were that Kainda was a suspect in a case of theft and was found in possession of suspected marijuana while police officers were searching him.

Bane, pupils being jailed for stealing a bicycle is a global issue; its not just unique to Zambia alone. Even in other countries pupils are being jailed for the same offenses. Are u telling me Edgar Lungu is the president of those countries where pupils steal bicycles?
So be realistic in your comment, its globaaaaaal.

Both big and small thieves have been prevalent throughout the known history of our mother Zambia.
      1. During the Kenneth Kaunda era, there was a man called Anderson Mazoka who was the Managing Director of Zambia Railways. This man MHSRIP used to steal government cattle imported from Botswana, KK could order cattle for restocking the National Ranches, but Anderson used to exchange the fat, hibrid govt cows with his denkete infested ones. Being the MD, Anderson was finding it easy to stop the train and do the exchange.
      2. During the MMD govt, another thief by the name of Hakainde Hichilema was contracted to value the companies for privatisation. He valued them for a song so that he could be a share holder eg Sun hotel.
      3. During PF, we have that 19 yr old pupil who stole a bicycle. So tapali uwo mwingabepa taata.

        1. During the kaunda era and even after that era Mazoka lived his entire life without any criminal record for any wrong doing and went on to win an election which all know was rigged and stolen from him.

        2. During the MMD government, it seems the entire government was so dull such that a young man HH forced the government to sell companies for peanuts. However, even then upto now HH does not have a single criminal record and still walks freely. So one questions why he is not being taken to task. Actually the late leader of PF was in charge and in MMD government at that time.

        3. During PF however we now have the leader who funny enough is the only one with a criminal record for having stolen client’s money out of all the leaders mentioned above. So tapali uwo mwingbepa ba yama.

Hard work pays off, something that lungu has no clue about. Lazy idiots will always scream theft when others make it in life. Ukose 2016 iyo

Sonat ati false worshipers who cant forgive….kkkkk why havent you also said false worshipers who can steal?.the courts of law…prisons all serve God in som way.God wants order among people whether they are his children or not.in ths case the false worshiper is the one who stole the bike.hes not regenerated inside but outside he shows tht hes a christian.these are the people who are paintn a bad picture about the church.ati church chuba ndoshi.no no a church is basically for true regenerated worshipers.so the court did its service to God.

Answering without research is like shooting in the air. If you have gone to school as you claim, a bit of research is always ideal. I advise you to read about mazoka’s life. You will discover that Anderson was the MD to ZR during Kaunda era. Then, it’s also common in Africa and Zambia in particular that bigger thieves like HH go Scot free, while small ones like that pupil are convicted. I understand your subjectivity in this matter, tribe!!!!
