Energy and Water Development Minister Dora Siliya says Government is spending US$13.1 million per month to import 148 Megawatts of power from Aggreko in Mozambique to mitigate the power deficit the country is facing.
Ms Siliya has also disclosed that ZESCO is at the moment exporting off power to Botswana.
In a ministerial statement on the current status of the power crisis in the country, Ms. Siliya says the country’s power deficit currently stands at 700 Megawatts and will increase to 1000 Megawatts by December 2015.
She explains that the increase in the deficit from 560 Megawatts to 700 Megawatts has resulted in increased hours of load shedding to safeguard the power infrastructure.
Ms. Siliya says due to the need to reduce load shedding further, load shedding has reverted back to an average of 8hours and more from the previously 5 to 6 hours for the domestic users.
She states that load shedding is being undertaken to ensure that generation of power is kept at reduced levels to allow the water in the reservoirs to last until the next rainy season.
The Energy Minister adds that in order to maintain power generation up to the 2017 rainy season, ZESCO needs to generate at lower levels than the 2015 levels.
And Ms. Siliya has dismissed assertions that the power deficit the country is experiencing is because the PF government is exporting power to raise money for the 2016 elections and that substandard machines have been installed at Kariba.

There has been a signed contract between Zambia and Botswana before all the load shedding started.
There is nothing the govt can do, us importing is what we need now, unless if this contract started now to import and export we would say foolish govt, but nobody knew water levels will dwindle in our rivers, lakes

Were you born stupid ? Depending on the the way the contract was signed between Zesco and Botswana was signed,Zesco might be not have a choice but to supply Botswana with electricity. So first do your homework and find out from Zesco the terms and conditions of supply of electricity to Botswana.

I might have been born stupid and my stupidity probably waned off as i grew. But it seems in your case you must be getting more stupid the older you get. I say this because nothing in my comment has touched on the issue to do with supplying botswana power. I do not care who you export power to. All i care about is that the zambian people have reasonable power supply to enable them to be productive and live in respectable manner. You seem to have read all comments here and just assumed that NEZ is saying what everyone else is. That my friend is what I call foolishness of the highest order. silly pf cadre

Whenever a minister is about to open their mouth I expect them to be telling me how they are resolving the problems the nation is going through. Not to heap more misery on the already desperate condition

Iam a bit behind with the minister’s statement mwebantu. loadshedding is as a result of low water levels, and she says loadsheding will increase in december. what is the logic here? because in december i expect water levels to increase as it will be raining but how come loadsheding to increase? need clarity mwe.

Dull recycled ministers bwafya, listen to lumbida wen he is giving statements towards the meal mile hiking of priceses solutions not predicaments of doom.
