Hiked Zesco Tariffs Will Affect Economy – EAZ

The Economics Association of Zambia (EAZ) has projected that Zambia’s economy will in the short term be negatively affected by the hiked ZESCO electricity tariffs.

EAZ President Crispin Mphuka has told QFM News that this will manifest in the high cost of production.

Dr. Mphuka notes that this high cost of production will also mean higher prices for consumer goods.

He however says in the long-term, his association anticipates that the hiked electricity tariffs will have a positive effect on the economy.

Dr. Mphuka explains that this is because more investors will be attracted to invest in power generation.

He says this will also result in Zambia having much lower electricity tariffs as power generation and supply will have improved.

And Dr. Mphuka has noted that much as much as the Country is now migrating towards effecting cost reflective electricity tariffs, it is also important that government considers unbundling ZESCO.

He says the EAZ is of the view that ZESCO will be more efficient if its power distribution, transmission and generation units operate independently.

Oh! Yes it’ll and so is load-shedding, let’s only hope to God that the money they ‘ll re-coup shall ultimately be put into good use or re-invested back into electricity generation. Someone said this ‘ll attract other would-be energy investors and spurs up the economy somehow.. let’s just keep our fingers crossed as we keep on tightening our already tightened belts.

President Lungu lied to us in his first presidential speech that the life-line limit would be increased from 100 to 500 kwh. Today it is 300kwh. Loyalty lost!
