5FM Owner Matteo Phiri Dies

MateoVETERAN broadcaster Matteo Phiri has passed on after a battle with cancer.

The feted broadcaster, who has been an enduring voice on the Zambian radio scene, passed away on Wednesday, December 16 2015.

Following the news of his demise, Zambians took to social media to celebrate his life . Tributes were paid to Mr. Matteo Phiri, described by peers, friends and colleagues in journalism as kind and humble.

Musician Chilu Lemba, reminisced on his encounters with the veteran broadcaster

“Condolences to the Phiri family and 5FM (Zambia) staff on the passing of the CEO, Mr Mateo Phiri. His passion for radio was huge. When I was a young radio presenter working at Radio Phoenix, he’d take time out to give me feedback at the end of my shift on what I did right and wrong. He didn’t even work at our station. He just loved to groom fresh talent. “Don’t argue, you were not there!” (That was his famous catch phrase). MHSRIP,” eulogized Chilu.

Your death turns a page and a chapter in the world of authentic radio broadcasting. It was a privilege and a joy to share a life with you. You belonged to a lineage of bonafide broadcasters from the pedigree of Mario Malyo, Haggai Chisulo, Peter Mweemba, Ken Maduma etc. We will eternally shed our tears in memory of you each time we hear today’s counterfeit broadcasters stammer as they labour through hourly news on radio.

We in the UPND would like to convey our sincere condolences to family and friends. We mourn with you all zambians. It is sad that matteo died while zambia was still experiencing the infringment of freedom of speech and association under the pf. We would have hoped that matteo would have been there to see the change under upnd in 2016 when broadcasting would be unbiased and free. RIP
