UPND Shocked By Tear-Gassing Of MMD Meeting In Lundazi

The opposition UPND is shocked and appalled by the reported tear-gassing of an in door meeting MMD President Nevers Mumba was chairing on Friday yesterday in Lundazi Eastern Province.
The UPND is particularly shocked that the teargas canister was thrown by a police officer who is supposed to be trained in handling such deadly weapons.
The UPND spokesperson Charles Kakoma says his party finds it to be criminal and is calling upon the Police command to take appropriate disciplinary measures against the said officer and his supervisors.
In a statement to Qfm News Mr, Kakoma states that this is because such an act by the police officer is a gross violation of freedoms and democratic rights.
Mr. Kakoma says such behavior should not have any place in a democratic Country like Zambia.
He says for the fact that Dr Mumba was addressing an indoor meeting, which does not require a police notification it was illegal for the police to disrupt the peaceful meeting.
Mr. Kakoma is of the view that Dr. Mumba can in this case even sue the Police for criminal trespass.

He notes that as party that has been receiving such unwarranted force repeatedly UPND sympathizes with the MMD and offers its support to any calls for redress.
Mr. Kakoma states that the UPND also calls for reform of the Public Order Act.
He says it has become clear that for as long as it remains in its current form the party in power will use it to try and justify all sorts of repression and authoritarian behavior.

A foolish UPND sympathising police officer could have been the one who threw the teargas canister so that their stiff and wooden idol, HH gains political mileage.

What’s even more shocking why hasn’t Edgar Lungu castigated or addressed to these now common police intimidation and brutality on opposition parties? Does Nevers Mumba deserve tear gas? Was he of any danger to the community? This kind of nonsense Zambia has fallen into with Edgar doing all he can to intimidate opponents. No matter what he does his months are numbered… kuya ba shi Tasila useless man. Has he been teared gassed in his life? Even his presidency yali yapa mbale.

One thing is clear that those who were teargased will never support the govt of the day in the ballot box. The action is detrimental to the ruling party. That is the reason why only well educated individuals should be given high positions be it in ZP or any other public service. The IG, by supporting such nonsense is decampaigning the ruling hence speeding their exit and once another party takes over another IG is appointed. So bwana you may not last a year on that position and agony is when you are removed on such grounds forget foreign service.

Sad development indeed especially in a Democratic Dispensation… At face value the first reaction to this story is to sympathize with the MMD Leader. However, how about the fact that the Victim has been Republican Vice President and an Ambassador to Canada? Does Dr. Mumba not know that Gathering of 12 or more people in a public place requires Police notification so they provide protection under the Public Order act. What more a Political gathering? Ba Mumba please be pastor play by the rules

I cannot add anything more to this article. Only thing i will say is that am currently in eastern province and the mood here is sombre and people are surprised at what is happening. People are now demanding change. We say remain patient and please no violence. We should respect the peace we have for now. Let the cops abuse you but please do not return the abuse with violence. we will use the votes to abuse them
