THE Mineworkers Union of Zambia (MUZ) has invested US$2 million to construct a milling plant in Kalulushi’s Chambishi township which will be producing 150,000 bags of 25 kilogramme mealie-meal per day.
The milling plant, whose works have started, is expected to create over 100 jobs for the local people and help to cushion the price of mealie-meal on the Copperbelt.
MUZ general secretary Joseph Chewe said in an interview on Monday that the milling plant will be managed by Shimaini Investment Limited, a company that has been established to specifically operate the activities of the enterprise.
“As MUZ, we are building a milling plant in Chambishi and works have really advanced. We want to venture into mealie-meal production to cushion the price of mealie-meal here on the Copperbelt.
“The milling plant will have the capacity to produce 6,000 by 25 Kilogramme bags of mealie-meal per day, which will be supplied to the miners as well as offloading it on the market,” Mr Chewe said.
He said some of the maize to feed the milling plant will be supplied by the retrenched miners from Mopani Copper Mines who will soon start venturing into farming.
“This milling plant will give hope to our miners who were retrenched in the mines. Once the former miners start their farming activities, they can be supplying maize to the milling plant,” he said.
Mr Chewe said MUZ’s plan is to diversify activities and not only to depend on membership subscription fee as the only source of revenue.
“With the economic hardships facing the mining sector [because of miners] losing jobs, we have to start thinking about other business ventures to sustain our operations,” he said.
