The mushrooming of guest houses in Lusaka’s Kanyama compound is not healthy for youths who may be attempted to abuse the facilities, according to residents.
And residents of the area have called on the authorities to seriously look into the issue.
They said that the area has recently seen an ‘‘incredible’’ increase in the construction of guest houses which was not good for the environment especially that the area had many youths who were doing nothing.
They said having too many guest houses in the area did not send good signals to the upcoming generation.
Some residents feared that the facilities in the area would lead to many indecent activities.
One of the concerned residents Ms Penelope Mulubwa said the area was infested with guest houses and it was not healthy for the young people in the area.
Ms. Mulubwa said the area has had cases where housewives wait at gates of guest houses expecting to see their husbands come out with young girls, hence causing confusion in the area.
She said if the guest houses were not for tourists then they were used by people in the same area for dubious activities such as fornication and adultery.
“These guest houses are just breaking up people’s marriages and some men use them to exploit young boys; the guest houses are so cheap such that even young people are able to afford them and they would rather spend the night at a guest house than at their home and this has led to early marriages in this area,’’ she said.
Ms. Mulubwa said there was no need for a small township like Kanyama to have so many guest houses.
“People have houses where they can sleep so it does not make sense for one area to have so many guest houses unless people leave their houses and to go to sleep in guest houses.’’
But some people who own guest houses in the area have argued that there was nothing wrong with having them.
They have said at this time when there was few employment opportunities, guest houses were helping in creating jobs.
“We benefit from these guest hoses; for some of us this is how we have been surviving, it is through running guest houses that we are able to put food on the table and send our children to school,” said one of the owners.
They said the guest houses were legally operated and had obtained necessary documents from the council. – Millennium Radio 90.5FM

guest houses is like a new business in lusaka town because of the dirty activities happening around. its not only in kanyama where this is happening come and check out emmasdale deval street and the lumumba road areas starting from buseko till madevu junction its like its the only business around which is worrying for those of as with young stars makamaka girls. walking around these area around 18;30 going up u would see what its like and how mind disturbing it is for us with kids around these areas, Government should come up with a law that will at list reduce these building of the guest houses because some i not truly for tourist but bad sexual activities. in deval street the guest houses there are permanently booked by Zimbabweans who take their clients for pleasure…
just wondering why would ba concil give land to so many guest houses instead of shops that people can easily access…this is promoting prostitution and bad sexual activities amoung Young and the likes, guest houses and housing should not be mixed at all
