Can Zambian Clubs Finally Conquer Africa?

With Zambia having four clubs in next year’s CAF Competition there is a lot of optimism among fans that Zambian clubs will finally get back to old days when the likes of Nkana FC, Mufulira Wanderers and Power Dynamos among others were terrors on the African continent.

While Power Dynamos remain the only Zambian club with an African Club title other clubs such as Nkana FC have fared well reaching one final and featuring in several Semi-finals.

HERE IS THE LIST OF FOUR CLUBS that WILL REPRESENT ZAMBIA

ZESCO UNITED

They will be participating in the CAF Champions League for the 6th time having reached two group stage and one Semi-final.

Zesco United qualified for CAF Competition for the first time in 2006 and were eliminated by Botswana’s Township Rollers the first year but learnt quickly and participated in the CAF Champions League for the first time in 2008 and reaching the Group stage in 2009 before breaking into the Semi Finals in 2016.

Zesco United remain unbeaten at home in all CAF Competition having played 27 games.

ZANACO FC

Finished the league as Runners up and will be playing in the CAF Champions League for the 8th time having reached the group stage for the first time this year.

Zanaco participated in CAF Competition for the first time in 2001 where they were eliminated by Green Mamba of Swaziland in the CAF Cup.

Zanaco came close to qualifying for the group stage for the first time in 2003 but lost out to Ismaily of Egypt 1-0 on aggregate and went on to have inconsistent results over the years including getting eliminated by Bakili Bullets of Malawi and suffering a 4-1 thrashing at home to Esperance in 2007.

Zanaco reached the group stage of CAF Competition for the first time in 2011 qualifying for the CAF CONFEDERATIONS Cup Group stage and eliminated Nigerian Giants Enyimba along the way beating them 4-0 in Lusaka.

The Bankers had the best defence in the CAF Champions League this year conceding just 3 goals in 10 games.

NKANA FC

Nkana finished third in the league will be participating in the CAF Confederations Cup for the second time having qualified for the Group stage in 2014.

Nkana will be participating in CAF Competition for a record 18th time which is more than any other Zambian club.

Nkana has reached one CAF Champions Cup final in 1990 losing to JSK Kabylie of Algeria on penalties and has been in four semi-finals.

Nkana FC has never been beaten at Nkana Stadium before in CAF Competition and the record stands at 53 games since Nkana started playing in 1976.

GREEN BUFFALOS

Buffalos ended fourth and qualify for the CAF Confederations Cup and return to CAF Competition for the first time since 2008.
Buffalos are taking part in their third CAF Confederations Cup and have never made it into the Group stage.

The army men have also reached the Quarter finals of CF Competition 6 times and have never made it past that stage.

Buffalos returned to CAF Competition in 2003 after a more than 20 year absence and that was the introduction of AFCON 2012 winning Captain Christopher katongo as he scored 10 goals between 2003 and 2004 in the CAF Cup.

Buffalos have only been beaten once at home in 22 CAF games and their only loss comes in 1974 when they were beaten 2-1 by Simba of Tanzania.
