The head of the Roman Catholic church, Pope Francis, has called for a phrase “lead us not into temptation” in the ‘The Lord’s Prayer’ to be changed.
The Pope argued that the translation used by many parts of the world goes against the teachings of the Bible.
He also stated that the Italian and English translation go against the teachings of the church. Followers of the faith in the much-recited prayer, call on God to “lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil”.
Speaking to Italian broadcasters, the Pope said: “It is not a good translation because it speaks of a God who induces temptation. “The French have modified the prayer to ‘do not let me fall into temptation’, because it is me who falls, not the Lord who tempts me to then see how I fall.”
After a 17-year debate, theologians and writers concluded that the French equivalent of “And lead us not into temptation” implied that God Himself could lead us astray, rather than help us keep on the straight and narrow, and thus had “blasphemous” overtones.
I have always had issues with this phrase as well! Mutabaruka also has questioned this in his better must come song!
From my understanding it refers to God not tempting us to test our faith. Remember the story of Lazarus…..he was tempted with alot of problems to see if he was going to obey satan but he kept his faith. In the same way christians ask not to be tempted because we are of weak souls and may fail to keep the faith in God. Temptations are there as a test of Faithfullness in God.
God is all knowing to the extent that even before one commits sin He knows already. There is therefore no need to suggest that God would test one’s faith for Him to be sure of an individual’s faith in Him.The cause contradictions in the Bible are due to poor translations.
It does not imply that the Bible statement contradicts the faith that God all-knowing would test an individual when He already knows the outcome. God will test one so that as an individual, s/he will know whether truly one has faith in Him.
This just confirms how certain religions are ignorant of the truth which is God’s word the Bible. In fact one big religion lie is that the Pope represents Peter. Do your diligent research do not simply argue because you belong to that lie.
Now one wonders how many misleading statements there are in this book
Greg, it is the translations that can mislead, not the original writings. I hope you are following the same agenda.
Here is a word-for-word Greek-English translation of Matthew 6:13.
καὶ and μὴ not εἰσενέγκῃς you should bring ἡμᾶς us εἰς into πειρασμόν, temptation, ἀλλὰ but ῥῦσαι rescue ἡμᾶς us ἀπὸ from τοῦ the πονηροῦwicked.
