There was uproar after the Minister of higher Education Prof. Nkandu Luo declared that meal allowances have been suspended.

The move displeased students. About 18 police land cruisers were deployed at the main campus in Riverside. Flares were fired. This intimidated the students.
However, around midnight the officers started going into campus and began breaking down doors. Some students have been badly injured. Others have been arrested.
Earlier this week, the student union was dissolved by the vice chancellor, Prof. Naison Ngoma because students rioted over the delayed meal allowances and substandard sanitation. Without the students union, it seems bleak as to who will bail out the detained students.

The attack was unprovoked and very severe. The exact number of students apprehended is uncertain as it is still ongoing.
