To both the citizens and those wearing it, the uniform symbolizes so many things. To the citizens, the uniform expresses the power and authority of the person covered in it and the demand to respect and distinguish such a person, while to the person wearing it, the uniform exhumes a deep sense of equality amongst peers, dedication, commitment and responsibility to the motherland and its people among others. But most importantly, to both parties the uniform remains a towering symbol of sovereignty and territorial integrity as well as national pride and identity.
Richard Johnson, a criminologist and former police officer, makes a case in an article entitled ‘The Psychological Influence of the Police Uniform’ that: “The psychological and physical impact of the police uniform should not be underestimated. Depending on the background of the citizen, the police uniform can elicit emotions ranging from pride and respect, to fear and anger.”
Therefore, as a proud citizen, I pray that for all its intent and purpose those behind this decision will focus more on the moral appropriateness of the decision and not the legality of the same.
All this must be done in appreciation of the citizens’ feelings regarding this matter. In my opinion, the commissioning of Chinese nationals as police reserve officers, posses a serious threat to the longevity of our national pride and identity.
