Questionable K3 Million Payment In The Ministry Of Education Exposed

Contradictions over the use of public funds in the Ministry of General Education characterized the sitting of the Public Accounts Committee when the permanent secretary Henry Tukombe and his entourage failed to explain 12 transactions amounting to over K3 million.

According to the Auditor General’s report of 2016, the money was disbursed to three officers.

Ministry of General Education Senior Accountant Chizaso Thole when asked if he was in custody of the cheque book at the time of the transactions, he confirmed being in charge but denied disbursing the K3 million to the three officers.

Mr Thole who has since been transferred to another ministry was summoned after Public Account committee Chairperson Howard Kunda announced that he wanted the civil servants who made the transaction to appear before the committee.

Kasempa Member of Parliament Brenda Tambatamba asked the General Education permanent secretary what action he has taken seeing that Zanaco made disbursements without documentation from his office.

In his response, Mr. Tukombe said the process of engaging ZANACO is still under way.
