Zambian Family Drowns After Their Vehicle Is Swept Away Into The River By Heavy Rains

Five people, who include four from the same family, have died after the vehicle they were in was swept away by heavy current into a River at Miwanga Stream Bridge on the Nakonde Kanyala road in Nakonde District of Muchinga Province.

This followed heavy rains that the district has been experiencing in the last 48 hours.

The accident has been confirmed to the Zambia News and information services -ZANIS- in Naknde by Nakonde District Commissioner Field Simwinga.

Mr Simwinga said the 5 accident victims met their fate on Tuesday night around 20:00hrs and were only discovered on Wednesday around 13:00 hours by children who went swimming in the stream and noticed a vehicle in the water.

The District Commissioner identified the deceased as William Sichalwe, Lawrence Sichalwe, Nalavwe Sichalwe, Deborah Sichalwe and a pupil at Chanka secondary School only identified as Simukoko.

He said the four from the same family were coming from visiting their sick father who is admitted at Nakonde District Hospital.

Mr Simwinga said the vehicle they were in, an unregistered Toyota Corrola, is still submerged in water while the bodies of the 5 have been retrieved by a combined team of Zambia Police and Nakonde District council Fire Brigade officers.

The District Commissioner has since appealed to motorists to be careful on the roads during the rainy season.

He also appealed to the Government to quicken the construction of the Nakonde-Kanyala road which is now almost impassable.

very sad indeed .We regrettably lost another family a few years back at kamfinsa stream in kitwe under the similar circumstances . There is need to install guard rails on all bridges to avoid unnecessary loss of precious lives
