Excessive Drinking Costs Lusaka Woman Marriage

A LUSAKA woman who always spends nights out whenever her husband is away on work trips has lost her marriage a local court.

This is a case where John Mukuka, 31, of Soweto compound sued Miriam Chikwanda, 24, of Zingalume compound for divorce after separating for four years.

Mukuka told Senior Court Magistrates Miyanda Banda and Pauline Newa at sitting at Matero Local Court that whenever he phoned his wife while out for work, he discovered that she was drinking beer with friends.

He claimed his wife Chikwanda had a habit of drinking and spending nights out whenever he was out of town for work.

Mukuka explained that at one time, Chikwanda even hit him with a brick in the presence of her mother and proceeded to sell their sofas.

He complained that he had never known peace in his marriage.

“Chikwanda got all the households goods and deserted me. She has a spirit of poverty, she has been causing me to get fired at work,’’ said Mukuka.

But in defence, Chikwanda said her husband always gave money to his mother and not her, adding that she had only used Mukuka’s ATM once in 2014.

She claimed that Mukuka’s mother never liked her and that she wanted the couple to live at her house.

Chikwanda added that they were forced to go on separation because Mukuka’s mother had told him that the child they had was not his.

“Mukuka’s mother was even saying that I am a prostitute. Mukuka is the first born and he is educated, his mother loves him very much. I sold the sofas because Mukuka told me to sell households goods to maintain the child,’’ said Chikwanda.

The court said there was lack of communication and trust in the marriage adding that the couple had stayed on separation for four years without making love yet were still young.

The court granted the couple divorce without compensation but Mukuka was ordered to pay a monthly child maintenance fee of K350 and households goods were not shared

One wonders who is telling the truth here, though mothers in laws are a problem too
