United Prosperous and Peaceful Zambia(UPPZ) leader Charles Chanda outsmarted President Edgar Chagwa Lungu, United Party for National Development(UPND) president Hakainde Hichilema and United Democratic Congress(NDC) leader Chishimba Kambwili when he donated Meali-meal to the victims of Common Market for East and Southern African,(COMESA) Market inferno.
Fire swept through COMESA Market in 11th July 2018 around 21hours, destroying goods worth millions of Kwachas.
This was barely 24 hours after Buseko Market in Mufulira was gutted.
President Lungu, Hichilema and Kambwili have all been to the gutted market but no one has extended their hands to the the victim.
This was in sharp contrast to Mr Chanda who donated over 500 bags of Meali-meal to the victims.
Mr Chanda arrived at the scene at 14 hours, shortly after Hichilema and his noisy cadres left the place without assurance of support to the mourning marketers.
The UPPZ leader straight away went to SHABCO Milling which is opposite the gutted market where victims where gathered and started distributing meali-meal to them.
When word went round that Mr Chanda was donating Meali-meal to the affected marketers, officers from the Zambia Police Service and the Zambia Intelligence Services popped up and attempted to block him from doing a humanly duty.
Perhaps it was fear that he would embarrass the Head of State who went to the gutted market with nothing.
The fearless Chanda, however, told off the police officer to be reasonable as his gesture was purely meant to help the people who had a tragic in their midst.
“You can’t intimidate me. If this government had purchased genuine fire fighting machine, the fire could have been quenched and million worth of goods could not have been lost. Let me do my part as an opposition leader. These other politicians have been here but what have they done for the victims,” he asked.
However, the law enforcement agents pleaded with Mr Chanda that with the poverty levels in the country, there could be a stampede and he could be held responsible.
Mr Chanda obliged but ordered his men to write the names of the marketers who did not receive meali-meal to get the commodity at a later stage.
