Dear Editor,
Accord me some space in your widely read news website,
On 19:30 hours of 19th July, 2018, Prime TV, carried a gruesomely sad story in which it reported a man who has been working for his boss of Indian origin as house help for 18 years before he was fired for allegedly failing to report for work for consecutively 3 days.
While failing to report for work attracts serious punishments including dismissal, that does not mean the punishment should be beyond proportion. The poor man, was thrown out of the house with all his belongings and therefore had to spend a night outside his former boss’ wall fence.
The following day, he started claiming for his benefits which included pay for accrued leave days. Sadly, the boss wasn’t willing to pay him and was about to shift from this house. And since he is apparently powerful than this poor former employ, the boss reported him to the police who came and overzealously arrested him and put him in custody at Chelston police. The man was only released after the intervention of the higher authority and was thus paid part of his benefits after the labour officers too intervened. All thanks to Prime TV.
From all indications, the police must have been compromised because if they where in their normal senses and professional, there is NO WAY they would have found grounds for arresting this man who had spent a night in the cold with his poor family of four, including a child for peacefully demanding for his entitlement.
The police must know that they we have lost confidence in them and any unlawful acts of such, will only erode even the tiniest respect and trust the public still has in them. Thus, as remedy to re-professionalize the police service, the victim should SUE the state for unlawful detention and I wish to call upon lawyers that are interested in service the little respect left for the police service to render the legal service to this victim for pro bono.
