A WIFE of Chipata township narrated before the Kitwe local court how her husband’s adulterous behaviour led him to marrying three more women and fathering two children outside wedlock from different women, including her own sister.
Naomi Kunda was testifying in a case in which she sued Lionel Kalumba for divorce on grounds that he is promiscuous. The two got married in 1996 and they have six children together.
Kunda told the court that problems in their marriage started in 2005 when her husband impregnated her younger sister while the couple lived in Serenje.
She said she felt betrayed by her husband’s actions but that the two later reconciled after their family members intervened. Kunda said in 2006, her husband again started sleeping with one of her cousins and that when she discovered the affair, he left Serenje for Kitwe without her knowledge.
She said upon realising that her husband had relocated to Kitwe, she followed him to Chipata Township, where he was living. Kunda said she later discovered that her husband had married another woman in Kitwe, whom he was renting a house for.
Kunda said despite his infidelity, she decided to remain in her marriage but was surprised to learn that he had again married another woman.
She said her husband then moved their household goods to his third wife, leaving the house empty.
“As we are talking now, he has moved in with his third wife, whom he has married and has a child with her,” she said.
And Kalumba admitted to his wife’s allegations and told the court that he is an adulterous man because his wife sexually starves him.
He told the court that he usually begged for sex from his wife, which forced him to marry other women, who willingly met his need.
And Kitwe senior local court magistrate Fredrick Ndhlovu granted the couple divorce and ordered Kalumba to compensate his wife with K10,000 to be paid in instalments of K200 per month.
