A woman of Kitwe, who had sued her 31-year old husband for divorce because of disrespect sparked by an underwear bought by her parents has opted for reconciliation because she cannot imagine her son being raised by divorced parents. When the divorce matter came up for hearing recently, Tabitha Shacibi, 25, urged Buchi Local Court senior magistrate Elita Bwalya to withdraw the divorce suit against Joseph Nyendwa.
Shacibi said she had thought carefully about the issue and decided that the court should just counsel her and her husband so that they could learn to live in harmony as husband and wife. But Nyendwa refused to reconcile with Shacibi, insisting that divorce should be granted.
Magistrate Bwalya advised Nyendwa to buy a divorce summons, since he is the one that wants it. The friction in the couple’s marriage emanated from an act of ‘love’ by Shacibi’s parents who bought their daughter a pair of underwear but this did not go down well with Nyendwa, who interpreted their action as disrespectul.
During the divorce hearing, Tabitha narrated that problems in their marriage started in 2015 when she returned home with an underwear bought for her by her mother. She said her husband said a lot of things over the underwear and even called for a meeting. Shacibi said she moved on from the underwear issue but problems continued because Nyendwa, a teacher by profession, never consulted her when buying things for the home.
“Whenever I asked him, he told me that he is the one that works for the money and can spend it as he pleases,” she narrated.
She said whenever she asked for money, Nyendwa gave excuses by saying that his sister had borrowed money.
Shacibi said of late, Nyendwa had developed a habit of chatting with girls on Facebook in her presence and calling them names such as sweetheart.
And Nyendwa said he was willing to divorce Shacibi because he had lost feelings for her.
He said Shacibi lacked affection which he found in the girls he chatted with on Facebook.
