ZAMBIA is a civilised member of the international community which cannot treat anyone unfairly, including Zimbabwean politician Tendai Biti, State House has said.
Special Assistant to the President for Press and Public Relations Amos Chanda told journalists on Thursday night that there is no need for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees to be anxious that Mr Biti was denied asylum in Zambia.
“Zambia will not treat anyone unfairly. We are in touch with authorities in Harare. Zambia seeks to see peaceful return to normalcy in Zimbabwe,” Mr Chanda said.
He said Mr Biti is being given a free and fair trial in his country.Mr Chanda said reports that Mr Biti was deported from Zambia are false and that the country did not breach any international law.“There was no deportation. Mr Biti was merely seeking asylum and he was subjected to immigration formalities,” he said. Mr Chanda said Mr Biti was handed over to Zimbabwean authorities peacefully.
“Zambia had secured sufficient assurances from Zimbabwe that Mr Biti would be treated fairly and not subjected to any injustice,” he said.
The Zimbabwean politician made international headlines when he attempted to flee his country to seek asylum in Zambia.
But after consultations, Government denied Mr Biti asylum on grounds that there was no anarchy in his nation.
Zambia later secured his safe passage back to Zimbabwe.
Zimbabwean authorities have accused Mr Biti of inciting violence after the general elections that saw Emmerson Mnangagwa win.
Mr Biti appeared in court in Harare on Thursday and was release on bail.
