Bowman to sweep Lusaka roads

Government will partner with parastatal institutions to maintain cleanliness on some roads and streets as part of the Keep Zambia Clean, Green and Healthy campaign, Lusaka Province Minister Bowman Lusambo has said. Mr Lusambo said each company will adopt a specific road or street which it will invest in to ensure cleanliness at all times.

He said this yesterday when he checked on a stretch on the Great East Road which is being maintained by a private company called Spectrum Corporate Services.

“We are having good interactions with parastatal companies and soon they will adopt some areas of their choice,” Mr Lusambo said.
He said roads such as the Great East and Airport roads are very important and should be kept clean because they give a first impression of Zambia to foreigners as they leave Kenneth Kaunda International Airport.

“People from other countries cannot take us seriously if the first thing they see when they enter the capital city is how untidy our roads and streets are,” Mr Lusambo said.

He urged the private sector to emulate Spectrum Corporate Services and support Government’s efforts in keeping Zambia clean, green and healthy.
And Mr Lusambo urged companies to find a way of advertising in a smart way unlike staining walls with unnecessary writings.
“We need to discourage these unnecessary writings on company walls. For example, the way drilling institutions are doing their advertising on walls, it makes the country look like it is only about drilling,” he said.

And Spectrum Corporate Services spokesperson Joost Groeneveld said the company appreciates Government’s efforts in keeping the country clean.
“We will continue supporting Government through corporate social responsibility, and we encourage people to use bins, and not throw litter anyhow,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mr Lusambo has urged management at Chelston Clinic to continue delivering quality health services to members of the public.
