Former First Lady Christine Kaseba’s garden boy has walked to freedom after the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) entered a nolle prosequi in a matter he was accused of stealing beer belonging to Mwelwa, her daughter.
Zachariah Mulama and two maids, who are serving a two-month jail term, were jointly charged with theft.
On July 20, 2018, Stella Michelo, 45, Eusibia Malambo, 27 and Mulama, 24, all from Mtendere township, in Lusaka, being employed by Dr Kaseba as house maids and garden boy, respectively, stole clothes and one pack of Heineken valued at K5,000.00, the property of Mwelwa.
Michelo and Malambo pleaded guilty to the charge and were last month sent to jail. Yesterday, Mulama, who denied the charge, appeared before Magistrate Nsunge Chanda for trial. But before he could be tried, the prosecution told the court that they received instructions from the DPP’s chambers to discontinue the matter.
Magistrate Chanda then set Mulama free. “Since the DPP’s chambers have entered a nolle prosequi, I set you at liberty,” Magistrate Chanda said as Mulama walked out of the court smiling. In an interview after the verdict, Mulama said justice has prevailed in the matter.

When the matter came up for plea before Magistrate Mwandu Sakala yesterday, Zulu admitted the charge while Phiri pleaded not guilty.
The court adjourned the matter to Thursday next week for reading of facts and sentencing of Zulu. Meanwhile, a Zambia Army officer yesterday appeared in the Lusaka Magistrate’s Court for allegedly beating his former wife after she trespassed on his farm.
