Police in Kitwe have arrested a 52-year-old man for allegedly defiling his 15-year-old granddaughter. Joseph Ng’andwe of Bulangililo also attempted to take his own life by stabbing himself in the stomach after defiling his granddaughter but only sustained injuries.

Copperbelt commissioner of police Charity Katanga said in an interview yesterday that the incident happened on Thursday. Mrs Katanga said Ng’andwe called her granddaughter to his house, where he defiled her. She said when the police went to apprehend the suspect yesterday around 03:00 hours, they noticed blood coming out of his stomach and he confessed stabbing himself.

“The suspect was rushed to Kitwe Teaching Hospital after police officers noticed that his intestines were protruding outside his stomach and one officer is waiting for him at the hospital, where he underwent an operation,” she said. And police in Kitwe have arrested a live-in maid for aborting a three-month-old pregnancy.

The incident happened on Thursday between 08:00 hours and 17:00 hours in Garneton township. Mrs Katanga said the maid was picked up by police officers around 03:00 hours yesterday after the owner of the house, identified as Mwema Litana, 42, received a report of the abortion from the other workers.
