Inter-denomination Jesus Ministries prophet John Simfukwe has been arrested for allegedly swindling a widow out of K200,000.
This was allegedly after promising her that he would pray for the money so that she could spend it wisely. Police deputy spokesperson Rae Hamoonga confirmed the arrest of 41-year-old Simfukwe in an interview after the victim, Mildred Chikote, reported the matter to the police.
Ms Chikote said her husband, who worked in the Zambia Army, died in 2016 and she was paid K300,000 by Government.
She took the money to Simfukwe, who allegedly told her that she needed to pay tithe so that he could pray for the funds.
“When we calculated the tithe, it was about K30,000, which I gave him,” Ms Chikote said.
The 43-year-old woman said after giving tithe to the prophet, he allegedly proposed that she needed to buy a house and start a business.
Ms Chikote said Simfukwe found a house for sale purportedly costing K165,000.
She also said Simfukwe asked her to give him K90,000 so that he could help her start a business of supplying beans to government hospitals. Ms Chikote alleged that after giving him the full amount to buy her a house, Simfukwe only paid K65,000 to the house owner. Ms Chikote said after asking about when she was going to move into her house, Simfukwe could not state his position.
“I became suspicious when he started dilly-dallying. And when I went to check the house, I was told that the prophet did not pay the full amount to the owner of the house,” she said. Ms Chikote said Simfukwe has not paid her back the money both for business and the house.
Simfukwe is expected to appear in court soon.
Mr Hamoonga said police have charged Simfukwe with obtaining money by false pretences. “We would like to warn all those who are hiding behind the pulpit with the purpose of swindling vulnerable congregants that we
