Government has started building Bangweulu Teaching Hospital in Luwingu district in Northern Province at K150 million.
Luwingu District Commissioner Patrick Chanda said in an interview that the hospital will also be offering health courses in various fields.
Mr Chanda said Government has engaged Sun Share Investment Limited to work on the project, which will have 800 bed capacity, an out-patient department, a pharmacy and a laboratory among others.
“Sun Share Investment Limited started mobilising the building materials in March this year and has now moved on site to work on the teaching hospital,” he said. Mr Chanda said Bangweulu district hospital is important to the area because it will be equipped with modern equipment to help deliver quality health care services not only to the people of Luwingu but to the rest of the country.
He said the hospital will also enable the people in the district to access medical services within the area and reduce on the cost they incur in accessing medical services outside the province. Mr Chanda said the hospital is expected to be completed within two years.
He said the population in the district has continued to grow hence need for the area to have the necessary infrastructures to effectively meet the health needs of the people.
Mr Chanda commended the Ministry of Health and the local leadership for being instrumental in advocating for the construction of a hospital in the district. He said works on the project will to create job opportunities
