A husband of Kitwe lamented before the Ganerton Local Court how his wife spends most of her time praying at the mountain neglecting to perform her duties as a wife. Davies Chama, who has been sued for divorce by his wife Rhoda Mwanya complained before the court that his wife does not clean the house nor cook for him because she spends most of her time praying at the mountain.
The two got married in 2009 and they have two children together.
Chama said his wife has refused to join his church but rather goes to one of the Pentecostal churches, where she spends most of the time praying at the mountain.“What kind of God does she worship because the God I know is the God of cleanliness and order? She always goes to the mountain to pray and when I complain about her behaviour, she starts insulting me,” he said.
Chama also accused her wife of threatening to commit suicide whenever he confronts her over her behaviour. He said he once gave his wife K10 to buy relish but that she used the money to buy a pesticide so that she could kill herself. Chama said his wife also has a tendency of getting all the household goods whenever they differ, which he said is quiet retrogressive.
He said his wife has been away from home now for one month and six days and that he does not know where she is.
Chama said whenever he calls his wife’s phone, a man answers. Earlier, Mwanya told the court that the only time she has been happy in her marriage was when she was pregnant.
She said immediately after giving birth, her husband started showing her his true colours by beating her. Mwanya said the differences between her and her husband are too much such that in a year, she packed out of the house on two occasions. “Every year your honour, I leave the house two times. I had even taken the matter to the Victim Support Unit so that my husband could be counselled but nothing has changed,” he said.
Mwanya said in 2015, she separated with her husband but that in 2016, he married another woman, whom he chased in 2017.
She accused her husband of being a womaniser, who even brings his girlfriend’s home and insults her, including her parents. Ganerton senior magistrate Mutono Banda adjourned the matter to a later date for judgement.
