A 42-year-old man of Chimwemwe township in Kitwe is nursing serious wounds after his wife set him ablaze following a marital dispute.
Copperbelt Commissioner of Police Charity Katanga said in an interview yesterday that the incident happened last Wednesday, but it was only reported to the police yesterday.
Mrs Katanga said the marital dispute was triggered by the husband’s decision to stay away from home after getting his salary and only returned after two days.
She identified the victim as Tony Masuya and the assailant as Petronella Mulenga, who has been arrested and charged with grievous bodily harm.
“What transpired is that the victim got paid and disappeared from home with the whole salary and only went back after two days,” she said.
Mrs Katanga said Mr Masuya’s action angered his wife, who burnt him.
Mr Masuya was saved by alert neighbours, who rushed him to Kitwe Teaching Hospital. He is currently in the intensive care unit of Zambezi ward at Kitwe Teaching Hospital. “The suspect is in police custody and a docket has been opened. Investigations have been instituted into the matter,” Mrs Katanga said.
