A 38-year-old man of Mansa has narrated before the local court how his wife of 18 years and her lover beat him to near-death after he found them sleeping together. This was heard in a case where Clara Nalavwe sued her husband Charles Mwambazi for divorce on grounds of violence.
But Mwambazi told the court that his wife likes wearing skimpy clothes to attract young men.

Mwambazi told senior local court magistrate Leorntina Zaloumis and Margarete Sakalimba that he married his wife in 2000 and, together, they have five children. Bride price was paid. He said problems started in 2013 when she changed her behaviour and started wearing skimpy clothes.
Mwambazi accused his wife of having extra-marital affairs and wearing tight skinny jeans, leggings and very short dresses and skirts.

“One day, I went home from work and I heard voices from our bedroom. When I went to check, I found my wife on top of another man on our matrimonial bed,” Mwambazi said. “After I grabbed all their clothes that were on the floor, my wife and her lover started beating me up and I almost died but I was rescued by my neighbours, who rushed me to the hospital. Up to now, I still have body pains,” he said.

He said his wife’s behaviour of wearing tight clothes has also affected their three girls, who also dress the same and have since fallen pregnant.
And Nalavwe said her husband is a jealous man who does not allow her to wear fashionable clothes. She said, one day, her husband got all her clothes and threw them in a pit-latrine and asked her to wear his clothes, including pants.

Nalavwe said her husband also beats her every time they have a dispute. She begged the court to grant them divorce saying they might kill each other.
Magistrate Zaloumis adjourned the case for judgement.
