The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) has expressed interest in bidding to host the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations tournament, two weeks after the Chipolopolo’s ambitions of qualifying for the showpiece were ruined by Mozambique.
Last Friday, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) dropped Cameroon due to delays in preparing for the continental showpiece.
CAF will announce the new hosts for the tournament on December 31.
FAZ general secretary Kashala said in an interview in Lusaka yesterday that the association is interested in bidding to host the tournament but will consult relevant authorities before putting pen to paper.
The country’s five biggest stadia are National Heroes (60,000 capacity), Levy Mwanawasa (49,800), Independence Stadium (30,000), Konkola (25,000) and Arthur Davies (16,000).
But Konkola and Independence need major facelifts, while no modern AFCON has ever seen the use of a Stadium with timber terraces like Arthur Davies.
