Master of food solutions, poet and writer, teacher, former footballer, executive chairperson of Sylva Group of Companies and Vice-Chancellor of Sylva University Hector Banda (right) has died at the age of 66 after a short illness. Mr Banda’s second-born son, Chanda, confirmed that his father died on Thursday night around 22:00 hours at their home in Jesmondine.
He said that his father was fine during the day as he had time to play with his grandchildren. As per his practice, he even attended a Thursday revival hour service, where he was seemingly active. Chanda said after the service, his father worked a bit but later complained of chest congestion. “When mum returned to the bedroom after locking up doors, she found him unconscious,” said Chanda.
He was rushed to Victoria Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Born on September 21, 1952, Mr Banda goes down as one of the great writers, think tanks and footballers Zambia has produced. A devoted Christian and leader in the Deeper Life Bible Church, he spent time doing the work of God despite his busy schedule as an entrepreneur.
His commitment in church was evident after serving in various departments like media, protocol and pastoring a local church. He also dedicated time to mentoring young people, men and women in various areas at different fora on profitable living. He was educated at Sinda Indian School, Hillside European School and Chadiza School from 1969 to 1972. He pursued a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education at the University of Zambia and was later posted to Kabwe Secondary School to begin his teaching career.
He was appointed deputy head master for the school in 1980, before he was promoted as lecturer in communication skills at Evelyn Hone College.
Mr Banda leaves behind a wife, Sylvia, four children and a grandson.
