A woman of Lusaka who allegedly rudely answered a police officer who questioned why her teenage niece was wearing a miniskirt has been taken to court for behaviour likely to cause breach of peace.
Mirriam Mwanza, 28, and her 16-year-old niece are jointly charged with the offence of idle and disorderly persons.
On December 22 last year, Mwanza and the juvenile, both of Kamanga township, allegedly publicly conducted themselves in a manner likely to cause breach of peace.
When the matter came up for plea before Magistrate Nsunge Chanda yesterday, the duo denied the charge. According to police records, in the company of Mwanza, the juvenile was allegedly wearing a short skirt as she was passing through Kamanga Police Station. At this point, a police officer asked her why she was wearing a short skirt.
In response, Mwanza wondered why the officer questioned the length of her niece’s skirt when he allegedly failed to ask the same question after other women who had similar outfits walked passed the station.
It is alleged that the response from Mwanza and her niece led to their detention. The matter will come up on January 14 for trial.
Mwanza and her niece are in custody.
