A 37-YEAR-OLD man of Mbala district is stranded in the University Teaching Hospital after being discharged with damaged spinal cord.
Allan Simukoko suffered the injury after a 90 kilogram bag of maize fell on him from a truck in a farm accident in December 2017.
Simukoko has been paralysed from his waist down since the accident which rendered him incapable of walking or sitting for a long time.
“After the accident, I spent two weeks in Mbala General Hospital then I was brought to the UTH in January 2018 where I stayed and was told that I needed K26,000 to have my spine fixed. But I had no money or anyone to help me so I was discharged in July,” Simukoko explained.
He said by the time he was discharged, he had developed bedsores as a result of the prolonged period spent lying down in the hospital bed.
The father of four explained that he had no one to help him with money to get back home so he waited to catch a lift on an ambulance returning to Mbala after delivering a patient to UTH.
Simukoko explained he had been told to return to UTH after three months for review.
“I only managed to come back last week and the doctors told me that my bedsores were healing well and discharged me. When I asked about my spine, the doctor told me that nothing could be done because it had taken too long to be treated. I was told I will have to stay like this until death and was advised to buy a drug worth K400 every six months,” Simukoko explained.
He explained that the hospital discarged him last Tuesday and he is hoping to catch a lift with an ambulance that will be headed to Mbala.
“I can also go by bus but I have to pay for the whole back seat so I can lie down because I am unable to sit for a long time. But the problem is that I have no money. I have not been able to work since the accident happened,” he explained.
Simukoko, who is in Ward C21 of the UTH, appealed to well-wishers to help him return to Mbala.
