Manyumbi Toll Plaza to Be Renamed After President FTJ Chiluba

THE ‘Manyumbi’ Toll Plaza on Great North Road will be named after second republican President Fredrick Chiluba for his immense contribution to Zambia’s development, says Housing and Infrastructure Minister Roland Chitotela.

And Mr Chitotela said President Edgar Lungu is scheduled to ‘sign off an ambitious project’ to construct about 10, 000 kilometres of feeder roads across the country.

He said President Lungu wanted an all-inclusive developed Zambia regardless of the geographical location or political affiliation, hence, the ambitious project to take development to all parts of the country including rural areas.

The minister said it was government’s desire to rewrite history by bringing to life the names of certain individuals that have contributed to the development of the nation in different capacities, among them the late Dr. Chiluba.

Mr Chitotela said the toll plaza is scheduled to be commissioned for operation at the end of February or March 2019. Mr Chitotela said the toll plaza has been a subject of much debate and frustrations previously at the hands of a local contractor, Nzovu Transport, until government terminated the contract for failure to complete the works even after receiving the payments.

He said Nzovu Transport had delayed the project which was supposed to be handed over to Government in 2015.

“Some of the Toll Plazas will be named after Mr Nalumino Mundia, first Vice President Mr Kamanga, Rupiah Bwezani Banda, Elijah Mudenda, Sikota Wina, and Arthur Wina among others. “But this specific one in Kabwe will be named after our 2nd Republican President Frederick Jacob Titus Mpundu Chiluba,” he said. Mr Chitotela also instructed contractor of the Lusaka- Ndola dual carriageway, China Jiangxi, to also work on the township roads in Kabwe.

He also said Government would soon start the construction of Chisamba- Luano- Kapiri- Mkushi road.

Central Province Minister Sydney Mushanga thanked, President Lungu for awarding Kabwe district 60 kilometres of township roads from the Lusaka-Ndola dual carriageway.

Mr Mushanga said Central Province is has an investment potential in agriculture, agro-processing, tourism, mining and other sectors should be exploited to transform the region into an economic hub.
