ZAMBIAN sensational boxer Alfred Muwowo has intensified training in readiness for the Commonwealth flyweight title fight against defending champion Jay Harris of Wales on March 1 in Cardiff, Britain.

The defending Africa Boxing Union (ABU) champion Muwowo has promised to inflict the first defeat on Harris who boasts of 14 fights, all wins.

The 21 year old boxer believes his record of 10 fights (all wins) is good enough to grab the belt from the Walsh.

Speaking in an interview yesterday, Muwowo said he is shaping up well for the battle.

“I am determined to make Zambia proud in Cardiff, so my focus is on training hard. The coach Mike Zulu has been on top of things and ensuring I am in form for the challenge. I respect my opponents and the reason why I train hard. Its takes hard work to maintain a clean record.

I will fly the Zambian flag high, come March 1, set to leave a memorable mark in Cardiff,” he said.

And Oriental Quarries Boxing Promotions (OQBP) operations manager Christopher Malunga said he was happy with Muwowo’s training so far.

“So far so good, the boxer looks focused and heeding to the coaches’ instructions. It is our desire as OQBP to make Zambia proud whenever we are fighting away from home,” he said.

Harris was recently named Welsh Boxer of the Year at the Welsh Area Council Awards. The Swansea fighter, son of former British champion Peter Harris – is ranked No.4 in the UK.

Meanwhile, the Zambia Boxing Federation (ZBF) has post-poned its annual general meeting scheduled for today in Kabwe to a later date.

According to a circular sent to clubs yesterday, ZBF explained that the deferment was to allow the executive committee review the concerns raised by the affiliates.

Among the concerns raised by the member clubs include the increase of the affiliation fee from K500 to K750 and the need to amend the constitution at the AGM.
